Detroiter's Play Pu blished in NY

Playwright Arthur Miller once I
wrote to Detroiter Herschel Stein-
hardt:
"The theater is a cruel institu-
tion with no use at all for anyone
excepting a success. To reach that
status - or rather how to - is
something that cannot be analyzed.
It is trite to say, but you have only '
one course and that is : - write and
hold on as long as your belief in
yourself exists."
And so, part-time playwright and
full-time realtor Herschel Stein-
hardt continues to write - never
reaching Arthur Miller's success,
but always aiming for his own
"star in heaven."
That is what he calls his play
recently published by New Voices
Publishing Co. in New York.
"A Star in Heaven" was first
performed at the Concept-East
Theater, where it ran for 15 per-
formances. The Concept-East, an

present many plays - often good

ones - that wouldn't stand a
chance elsewhere, did another of
Steinhardt's, "Don't Think of Me
When I'm Gone."
His "Sons of Men" hit the big
time with performance on "Robert
Montgomery Pr e s e n t s" several
years ago. but in general, the road
has been long and lonely.
Steinhardt writes from the life
he has known. During the Depres-
sion, he held a job with the Fed-
eral Theater Play Bureau, barely
managing as a playwright. During
the war and up until 1952, he
worked in New York, doing pub-
licity for the United Service for
New Americans, meeting ships
bringing refugees assisted by the
United ev, is Appeal. .
Steinhardt wrote "A Star in
Heaven" some time ago. It doesn't
reach the power and momentum of
"Sons of Men," but it deals hon-
estly with the emotional destruc-
tion a philandering husband wreaks
' on his daughter. Recalling the oft-
uoted biblical lesson the father' s
sins are reaped by the girl, who
try as she might to escape his
memory, is as weak as he is. The
tragedy and futility of the play are '
not sufficiently impressed on the
reader, although he is reminded
time and again that each character
has not achieved what he is after.
Herschel Steinhardt's father,
Rabbi Ezekiel Steinhardt, wanted
Herschel to be a teacher. But the
boy was of one mind. His intentions
have not wavered; he continues to
reach for his "star in heaven."
