The operation, a joint under- taking by the National Sound Archives of the Jewish National and University Library and the university's Jewish Music Research Center, was part of the over-all project to study the oral tradition of different groups in the country. Research projects on traditions and way of life of communities such as Kurds and Samaritans are al- ready in progress, while a study on Negev Bedouins is planned by the National Sound Archives. A team of Hebrew University musicologists and technicians, equipped with portable tape-record- ers and microphones, covered the four-hour celebration at Mar Habad. The taped recording is n o w being studied by ethnomusicolo- gists and other researchers at the archives. The project includes re- search on the history and develop- ment of the Habad movement, the prevalence of traditional Habad songs and tunes over others and the influence of extraneous musi- cal elements on the Habad tradi- tion.
