honor of the founder of the Habad
movement.

The operation, a joint under-
taking by the National Sound
Archives of the Jewish National
and University Library and the
university's Jewish Music Research
Center, was part of the over-all
project to study the oral tradition
of different groups in the country.
Research projects on traditions and
way of life of communities such
as Kurds and Samaritans are al-
ready in progress, while a study
on Negev Bedouins is planned by
the National Sound Archives.

A team of Hebrew University
musicologists and technicians,
equipped with portable tape-record-
ers and microphones, covered the
four-hour celebration at Mar
Habad.
The taped recording is n o w
being studied by ethnomusicolo-
gists and other researchers at the
archives. The project includes re-
search on the history and develop-
ment of the Habad movement, the
prevalence of traditional Habad
songs and tunes over others and
the influence of extraneous musi-
cal elements on the Habad tradi-
tion.

THIS HAPPENED a couple of
years ago .. . to Oscar Kallen .. .
A cleaning woman was dusting a
desk in his office where new elec-
tronic phone-answering equipment
had been installed . . . When the
phone rang and no one was in the
office, the device automatically
picked up the receiver, and a tape-
recorded message was "spoken"
into the mouthpiece . . . Well,
tells Oscar, the phone rang, the
device went into action and the
message was repeated . . . The
surprised cleaning woman became
so frightened that she beat the
machine with her dust rag until it
shut up."
