(Continued from Page 1)
Israel, the Jewish State's military

needs and the urgency of pro-
viding for large numbers of immi-
grants who continue to pour into
the country. Because close to $12,-
000,000 in additional gifts will be
needed by UJA this year, he
urged 15 per cent increases in
giving.
An outline of the over-all obli-
gations to Jewish needs by Detroit
Jewry was presented by the con-
ference chairman, Hyman Safran,
and by Paul Zuckerman, as chair-
man of the steering committee,
and William Avrunin, executive
director of the Federation.
Reports were submitted by

Stanley J. Winkelman, Dr. Peter
G. Shifrin, Mandell L. Berman
and Irving Rose, chairmen re-
spectively of the community re-

Broader Coalition Govt.
Sought by Two Partners

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM — Requests for a
broadening of Premier Levi Esh-
kol's coalition government were
renewed Tuesday by two coalition
partners, the National Religious
Party and the Independent Lib-
erals.
Dr. I. S. Ben Meir, deputy in-
terior minister, told officials of
Rafi. former premier David Ben
Gurion's dissident party, that a
number of younger members of his
NRP were pressing to leave the
government because of a "crisis
of confidence" in the present
coalition.
Yitzhak Artzi, an Independent
Liberal Jewish Agency member,
told a party meeting in Natanya
that a wider coalition was need-
ed to carry out the 'government's
policies.
The premier's dominant align.
ment of Mapai and Ahdut Avoda
responded with plans to start an
immediate information campaign
to counter such proposals. The
campaign will continue for several
weeks in an atmosphere which
some observers said could be
described as an election mood
without elections.

Brandeis Dedicates School
WALTHAM, Mass. — The new
Florence Heller Graduate School
for Advanced Studies in Social
Welfare at Brandeis University
was dedicated Saturday. The build-
ing contains the teaching and re-
search facilities for the school,
founded in 1959 through an initial
endowment by the late Mrs. Flor-
ence Heller, who died last Jan-
uary at her home in Chicago.

Rose made a strong plea for in-
creased allocations for the capital
needs group because of the im-
pending duties involved in building
a Hebrew school in Southfield, an
apartment residence unit for aged
and other construction programs.
A plea also was made to the
United Community Services for in-
creased allocations to the four
Jewish agencies benefiting from
the city-wide drive. Assurances of
cooperation were given in a brief
address by William Frank, UCS
president.
It was announced that no de-
cisions have as yet been reached
regarding support for • the Hebrew
day schools. A strong appeal for
such support was made by Rabbi
Hayim Donin and was supplement-
ed by remarks by Mrs. Fred Lax,
who told of the benefits derived
from- day school studies.
Continuing a policy set last

year of inviting young leadership
to sit in on the conference, the
Federation hosted a number of
Junior Division members and
college student leaders.
