Detroit Women Kindle AJCongress Drive
to Press for Viet Holiday Truce Extension

A luncheon conversation be-
tween two Detroit area housewives
has snarked a nationwide cam-1
paign by the Women's Division of
the American Jewish Congress to
promote efforts for an extension
of the holiday truce in Vietnam.
According to Mrs. Aaron Shif-
man, president of the Detroit
Women's Division, Mrs. Arthur

long-time Congress members, re-
cently approached her with the
suggestion that Congress launch a
major letter-writing campaign to
President Johnson.
Mrs. Shifman passed the sug-
gestion on to the National Women's
Division in New York, which initi-
ated the campaign during its an-
nual Hanuka luncheon at the
Americana Hotel Dec. 12.
As 1,000 tapers were lit to
mark the sixth day of the festi-
val, Mrs. Charles Snitow of
national president,
Scarsdale,
read a statement calling upon
President Johnson to "extend
indefintely" the truce as a "be-
ginning and an opportunity to
seek a permanent peace."
Mrs. Shifman
declared that a
committee of lo-
cal congress wo-
men has been ap-
pointed with the
sole responsibili-

program. The
committee, chair-
ed by Mrs. Gran-
off, includes Mes-
