Nazi Documents Reveal Shocking Conditions During the Hitler Era

Experimental Text
on Holocaust to Be
Tried in Pilot Schools

NEW YORK—The publication of
the first experimental text on the
teaching' of the holocaust era was
announced by Dr. Judah Pilch, di-
rector of the National Curriculum
Research Institute.
Noting that there has been little,
if any, instruction on this most
significant experience in Jewish
history, Dr. Pilch said, "This vol-
ume is the first step in helping to
fill an inexcusable void in the cur-
riculum of Jewish education in
almost all schools under Jewish
auspices. It should also prove of
considerable interest to all other
American school systems."
The book has been prepared by
a group of educators for use in
secondary schools and on the
young adult level. It will be avail-
able during 1967 for use in 10
pilot Jewish schools in all parts
of the country.
In addition, a special "Guide to
Teachers" is now in preparation
and will be made available to the
pilot schools for criticism. The
text will undergo final revision
prior to its publication in printed
form. -
In Part One, the text deals with
the general economic and political
conditions which prevailed in Eu-
rope before World War I and be-
tween the two world wars prior to,
and during, the rise of the Nazis.
In Part Two, the Nazi attitude
toward the Jewish people is exam-
ined by Dr. Alexander S. Kohanski
and Professor Meir Ben-Horin; Dr.
Pilch details the factual story of
the holocaust from the time of the
Nazi party through the
rise -
Eichmann trial in Israel and the
Auschwitz trial in Germany.
Following this, the editor ad-
dresses himself to the perplexing
question of why the world was a
silent witness to these events.
Prof. Irving Halperin, in Part IV,
"The Holocaust in Literature," of-
fers examples from the writings of
survivors, and historic reflections.
The final portion of the book,
prepared by Abraham H. Foxman,
presents examples of resistance.
The publication of this experi-
mental edition was made possible
by a grant from the Memorial
Foundati )n for Jewish Culture
which subsidized one-third of the
cost of research and initial publi-
cation.

All those things which are now
held to be of the greatest anti-
quity, were at one time new; and
what we to-day hold up by example,
will rank hereafter as a precedent.
—Tacitus

How are the unknowing to un-
derstand what had happened in
Nazi Germany unless they are pre-
sented with the actual published
statements elaborating on the
views of the adherents to the Hitler
ideology?
Tragically, many of the ideas
have to be explained. The back-
ground of utterances must be un-
derstood. The intentions have to be
made known. The aim must be un-
derstood. Everything that was done
in Germany had led to the exter-
mination of millions of people, and
that has to be known.
"Nazi Culture" is a volume con-
taining the horrifying declarations
of the Nazis. The volume was ed-
ited by Prof. George L. Mosse of
the University of Wisconsin and
was published by Grosset and Dun-
lap (51 Madison, NY10). There are
documents and a variety of records
of the Nazi period, in translations
by Salvator Attanasio and others.
They should be read simultaneous-
ly with the explanatory text in Dr.
Mosse's introduction which ex-
plains the effects of the Hitler pro-
paganda which has misled the
German people and led it to the
path of barbarism.

morality. A revolution of the
spirit is for many men more
tempting than one which brings
about social or economic changes
and which might lead to chaos
instead of cementing order.
Nazism exemplifies the dangers
which lurk behind this facade of
conservation, a modern conserva-
tism which is vulnerable to ex-
treme views even if it rejects
them. It is unfashionable to
speak of the lessons of history,
but perhaps there is a lesson for
the present hidden among these
documents of the past."
Philosophic evaluation and rea-
soning helps, but in the instance of
the documents in this volume there
is need to be on guard lest they
mislead, lest they are read literally
and a generation that know not
what had happened may believe
them to be truths and moralities.

That is why, valuable as they are,
they must be offered to the ration-
al and not to the weak-minded.
Nevertheless this volume must
be accepted as an important adden-
dum to the documentary evidence

on the holocaust: they provide the
facts that should be known for a
complete understanding of the bar-
barities that were enacted only a
generation ago.
