Joseph Ross, Ex-Federal's President, Joseph Hirschfeld,
VP of American Jewish Committee Detroit's Oldest



Joseph Ross, former president of
Federal Department Stores and an
active participant in Detroit's Jew-
ish and civic life during his brief
stay here, died in New York Dec. 9
at age 52.
Mr. Ross, vice president of the
American Jewish Committee, was
chairman of Mayor Cavanagh's
Register and
Vote Committee;
chairman of t h e
Mayor's Commit-
tee for the Na-
tional Cultural
Center; and a
trustee of the De-
Ross
troit Historical
Society, Detroit Opera Association
and United Foundation.
When he was about to leave De-
troit last February, after resigning
as president of Federal's, Mr. Ross
was honored at a banquet at the
Sheraton-Cadillac Hotel. Three-
hundred leading Detroiters at-
tended.
At that time, he was given a
plaque in appreciation for his civic
work here. Chairman was the Rt.
Rev. Richard S. Emrich, bishop of
the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan.
During his 32 years in retail
merchandising, Mr. Ross had
been an executive of several

began his career as a packer in
Bloomingdale's Department Store
while attending Columbia Uni-
versity, from which he graduated
in 1935.
He worked as a student sales-
man at Macy's, at the same time
working part-time as a financial
reporter for the New York Times.
Mr. Ross became buyer at Macy's'
and left the company in 1944 to
become vice president and general
manager for Nieman-Marcus Inc.
in Dallas.
He became president of Daniels
and Fisher, a leading department
store in Denver, in 1954 and four
years later returned to Macy's as
president of its Davison-Paxton
Division, which operated six stores
in Georgia and South Carolina.
In 1961, he left his Atlanta home
to come to Detroit as president of
Federal's, a company with more
than 60 branches and headquarters
here. He lived at 17815 Hamilton.
Survivors are two sons, Kenneth,
a graduate student at Stanford
University, and Andrew, a student
at Brandeis University; his mother,
Mrs. Estelle Ross of New York:
and two brothers. Interment, New
York.

Joseph Hirschfeld, at age 88 the
oldest travel agent in Detroit, died
Dec. 10. He operated the Joseph
Hirschfeld Agency in the Park Ave-
nue Building for the past three
years, but had been located at
various downtown locations since
1902.
From 1902 to 1918, Mr. Hirsch-
feld also owned his own bank, and
with a successful travel agency,
managed to bring over several
members of his family from his
native Hungary and send them to
school.
A generous contributor to Cong.
Bnai Moshe, when it was built on
Dexter Ave., Mr. Hirschfeld, 70
Burlingame, also was a life mem-
ber of Pisgah Lodge, Bnai Brith.
He leaves two sisters, Jenny of
Los Angeles and Mary; two
nephews and one niece.
