British Nazi Leader Faces
Trial for Hate Conspiracy

LONDON (JTA) — Colin Jor-
dan, head of the tiny British Na-
tional Socialist Party — which has
about 40 members — and Peter
Pollard, one of his youthful fol-
lowers, were ordered Monday to
stand trial on charges of violating
the British Race Relations Act.
Trial was ordered by a Plymouth
court after a hearing on charges
of involvement in a conspiracy to
stir up hatred against Jews and
colored immigrants. They will be
tried on charges of distributing
insulting written matter "likely
and intended to stir up hatred
against a section of the public in
Great Britain distinguished by
color or race."
The two British Nazis were
bound over for trial at the next

ter Jan. 12. They were allowed
to post bail of 50 pounds ($140)
each.
The Plymouth court heard evi-
dence that Pollard received the
material from Jordan's headquar-
ters and that he affixed hate stick-
ers on a Plymouth synagogue and
on a public house. He also was
accused of painting swastikas with
the words "Jews Get Out" on
various walls.
He was quoted as telling police
that "Hitler's idea was best" and
that the British Nazi movement
would continue its work until "all
Jews were exterminated."

Catholics, Jews Blunt in Appraisal
of Schools' Treatment of Jews' Image

NEW YORK—For a solid seven
hours Catholic and Jewish clergy-
men, educators and laymen ex-
changed views on what the paro-
chial schools are doing — and not
doing — to present an accurate
image of the Jew, in order to com-
bat anti-Semitism.
The recent "Colloquium on Juda-
ism and the Church School" was
held at Marymount Manhattan Col-
lege under the auspices of the
Catholic School Board of the Arch-
diocese of New York, the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai Brith
and the Metropolitan Council of
Bnai Brith.
It was the initial program on
secondary school curricula held
under joint Catholic-Jewish spon-
sorship in the New York Arch-
diocese.
Rabbi Arthur Gilbert, direc-
tor of religious curriculum re-
search for ADL, who "without
reservation" praised the Ameri-
can Catholic Church "for having
taken such a decisive lead in the
development of better interreli-
gious relations in this country,"
pointed to the Catholic and Jew-
ish communities' mutual obliga-
tion as religious groups to know
more about each other's his-
tory, theology and literature.
Dr. Joseph L. Lichten, head of
ADL's department of intercultural
affairs, who was present at the de-

liberations of Vatican IT, agreed
that in inspecting the parochial
school curricula one would find
less distortion of the image of the
Jew than simple omission of in-
formation on Jews and Judaism.
Father Edward Flannery, ad-
ministrative assistant of the
American Bishops' Subcommit-
tee on Catholic-Jewish Relations,
and author of "The Anguish of
the Jews," published last year,
said the church would be remiss
in its mission of self-revitaliza-
tion if it failed to understand its
role — and the role of Chris-
tians in general — in the cen-
turies of persecution the Jewish
people has undergone.
Rabbi Solomon S. Bernards, di-
rector of the Anti-Defamation Lea-
gue's department of interreligious
cooperation, saw most texts used
in the religious studies curriculum
in Catholic schools as insufficient
by ecumenical standards in the
image of the Jew they present—
and as actually contributing to
distorted pictures of the Jew.
