founded eight years a g o. Later he wt
come to the history of the SHOMER, an
association which existed from (the
years) 1909 to 1920 for the purpose of
defending the settlements against Arab
robbers and rioters. At this point we
come to a new chapter in the history
of defence—the formation of the Jewish
Battalions during the First World War,
which took part in the conquest of
Eretz Yisrael by the British.
The period of British rule in Eretz
Yisrael (1918 to 1948) brought about
the development and unification of the
HAGANA, as it was impossible to rely
upon the British authorities for the
defence of the Jewish Community
(Yishuv). In June, 1920, members of
the SHOMER and veterans of the Jew-
ish Battalions formed the secret HA-
GANA. Thereafter this organization
was the defence force of the Jewish
Community during all the years of
riots and disturbances, and Eliyahu
Golom was the living spirit of the
HAGANA. During (the years) 1936-1937,
riots broke out again when the Arabs
demanded that the British authorities
stop Jewish immigration and settle-
ment. Here, too. the HAGANA stood
the test and defended 150 places of
Jewish settlements in all parts of the
country. During the disturbances, the
HAGANA became a large military or-
ganization with illegal arms stores and
officers' training schools. An under-
ground independent arms industry was
also started at that time.
The HAGANA also headed the move-
ment for volunteers in the war against
the Nazis. From its ranks came the
parachutists who penetrated the enemy
lines in order to give aid to the Jews
in areas conquered by the Nazis. From
here we proceed to the creation of
the PALMACH and to the HAGANA '
operations in organizing illegal immi-
gration and in the struggle against the
British authorities, up to the establish-
ment of the State and the creation of
the Israel Defence Army.

Louis Nizer's "My Life in Court"
was such a literary sensation —
one of the items having provided
a text for a play that had a long
run on Broadway — that the au-
of his career as
thor's description
are certain always
a lawyer
to
command widest attention.
That is why his new work, 'The
Jury Returns," published by Dou-
bleday, in which Nizer deals with
four more cases in which he played
the major legal role, is so interest.
demanding.
The Nizer skill is evident in
every instance — in the four cases
which dreW nationwide attention
and which now are reconstructed
with the same brilliance as was
evident in his earlier work.
The local Roy Fruehauf case,
in which Nizer succeeded in ex-
onerating Fruehauf in his involve-
ment with the $200,000 loan to
James Hoffa, is of special interest.
Lawyers will be especially in-
terested in this new Nizer work,
but the book reads like a collec-
tion of novels and provides excel-
lent reading for all who are
interested in human developments,
who love a court battle — and
Nizer's always are court battles—
and who relish well-motivated
plots. Each of the dramas in "The
Jury Returns" provides such dra-
ma for its readers.

AN AIRLINE
Is ONLYAS BIG
AS THE AIRPLANE
YOU'RE ON.
When a plane starts down the runway (and the ad-
vertising is behind you), all airlines are created equal.
The. ) , all fly at about the same speed. And they all
have about the same number of seats and windows and
ashtrays, not to mention rest rooms.
So if you wanted to take off for London next Tues-
day night at 8 :30 PM, no commercial plane in the world
could get you there with more style and grace than
El Al's flight 232.
And there's only so much delicious food you can eat
at one sitting, and so many pretty stewardesses you can
watch from one seat.
And only one European city you can land in at one
time. (El Al goes to 11 of them, by the way, and you
can land in every one of them for the price of a round-
trip ticket to Tel-Aviv.)
So if you've been shopping around for a
big airline, our number is 212 PL 1-3400.
You may find some airlines with more
planes than El Al, but none bigger.
