'Jewish Indians' in Sports Arenas By JESSE SILVER (Copyright, 1966, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) Karl Sweetan, the rookie quar- terback of the Detroit Lions, has many veteran football observers convinced that he will make it big in the National Football League. Despite this high appraisal, Swee- tan hadn't won for the Lions in his first three starting assignments. He did, however, gain a tie with the Chicago Bears and make the top-ten passing list of the NFL after only two starts. Sweetan had played but briefly before he got his big chance as .a sub for the injured Milt Plum in a 45-14 loss to the Baltimore Colts. He responded with a pass that went- for a 99 yard TD, his first touchdown pass in the NFL. The following week, against San Francisco, Sweetan had the game won with 19 of 34 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. How- ever, the 49ers came back to spoil his first start, they scored the winning TD with 51 seconds left to play and won the game 24-20. Sweetan is a 24-year-old blond from Dallas, Texas. He goes six- foot-one, 210 pounds, and has played football all over the map. He has shown his wares at Na- varro Junior College, Texas A&M, Wake Forest, the Toronto Argo- nauts and last year with the Pon- tiac Arrows of the Mid-West League. • Following a Detroit loss to Green Bay 31-7, Parker coach Lombardi said: "I think the boy (Sweetan) has the chance to become a fine long passer." "I'm a German Jew," replied Sweetan to a query about the origin of his name, "with a little Indian blood." Ron Soble is another Jewish Indian who is making it big these days. Soble can be seen in the part of Jim, a Sioux, on the ABC tele-: vision program "The Monroes." In his college days at Michigan, Soble was an outstanding long jumper. In 1951 he leaped 24'7 3/4", good enough to make NCAA Honor Roll and he ranked the No. 8 jumper in the world by Track & Field News.
