Fritz Lang, the almost-76-year-
old Vienna-born motion picture di-
rector. this year was honored in
Hollywood by the French Govern-
ment and presented by the Consul
General, Gerard Peres, with the
insignia of "Officier de I'Orde des
Arts et des Lettres." Having known
Lang for a very long time, this
columnist attended the ceremony
together with such personalities as
Paul Henreid, veteran film direc-
tor Jacques Tourneur, and writer
Walter Reisch.
Lang started his movie career in
Berlin as writer-director for the late
Erich Pommer in 1919. Among his
outstanding silent films were "Des-
tiny," "Dr. Mabuse," "Metropolis,"
"Woman on the Moon," and "The
Spy." His first talking picture,
"M" (starring Peter Lorre in his
initial screen appearance) has been
stamped a "pure classic tragedy."
When Hitler rose to power in
1933, Lang went to Paris where he
directed "Lilion," from the play by
Ferenc Molnar, with an unknown
by the name of Charles Boyer play-
ing the title role. Among his Hol-
lywood films, made over a period
of 25 years, especially noteworthy
are "Fury." with Spencer Tracy
and Sylvia Sidney; "You Only Live
Once," with Henry Fonda; and two
of the strongest anti-Nazi pictures,
"Man Hunt" and "Hangmen Also
Die."
