Soviet Union Warns Syrians
to Cut Down Their War Talk

that Nasser has no desire to see
King Hussein defeated, for I -his-
sein's dethronement would bring
about intervention from the Israeli
army and its occupation of the
Western part of Jordan. In such
an event. Egypt would not be able
to expel the Israelis.
Some political circles in Israel
agree with this view. They believe
that the Jordanian king has al:
ready succeeded in overcoming
the most difficult aspect of the
crisis threatening his throne.
French official circles, who did
not abstain from open criticism
against Israel over her punitive
action, - do not exclude the possi-
bility that Hussein might be forced
to permit the El Fatah terroristic
bands to Operate in his country
and that he even might agree to
military retaliation by his legion
forces against Israel—all this to
appease the incensed Jordanian
population.

SOVIET WARNS SYRIA

The Soviet Union indicated to
Syria that it had better tone down
its calls for a ''war of liberation"
against Israel. and concentrate in-
stead on constructive develop-
ments Sunday. At the same time.
the Kremlin attacked King Hus-
sein for opposing "progressive ele-
ments" in the Middle EaSt. and
again accused Western "imperial-
ism" of responsibility for the cur-
rent tensions in the Middle East.
It also criticized Israel. but in a
much milder form than earlier.
- The Soviet view appeared in •
Pravda, organ of the Communist •
Party, and was interpreted in •

part as a hint that the Kremlin
wants the regime in Syria, which
it has supported, to go easy on
its war aims.

Asserting that even the West •
recognizes now that the Soviet
policy in the Middle East aims to-
ward lessening of tensions and '
securing peace in the area, Pravda
said: "It is not on the battlefield,
but on constructive sites, that peo-
ple build their future."
Pravda reminded Syria that the
USSR has been providing eco-
nomic and technical aid for the
construction of a proposed Syrian
dam on the Euphrates River.
The Egyptian-Syrian Defense
pact does not provide for imme-
diate intervention by the Egyptian
army in case of . warfare between
Israel and Syria, according to "El
Ahram." the semi-official organ
of the Egyptian Ll overnment. The
newspaper adds that in such event,
the Syrian army must by itself
repulse the attack.
