Religious Zionists Rap Soviet Bias,
German Nazism; Stollman Elected

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (JTA) —
The 57th annual convention of the
Religious Zionists of America con-
cluded here Sunday with the
adoption of resolutions calling
upon the Soviet government "to
grant opportunities for free and
unqualified religious freedom to
its 3,000,000 Jewish inhabitants"
and appealing to the West German
government "to adopt severe
measures to stamp out all vestiges
Of Nazism wherever found." Rabbi
Herschel Schacter of New York
was elected national president.
Detroiter Phillip Stollman was
elected vice president.

In an address Dr. Shlomo Ben
Meir, Israel's deputy minister of
the interior, said that Israeli
Arabs enjoy a higher standard
of living than their brothers in
neighboring Arab countries. He
also pointed out that "Christian
and Arab citizens of Israel have
complete religious freedom and
cultural autonomy in their va-
ried spiritual practices."

roundtable conference Israel and
the Arab countries to find means
to reduce tension and ultimately
lead to peace in that area was
voiced at the convention.
"In view of recent events in the
Middle East and the resultant one-
sided United Nations censure of
Israel, with implied future sanc-
tions, the Arab countries now have
an open invitation to provoke
Israel to further retaliatory at-
tacks. It is therefore incumbent
on the major powers in general
and the United States in particular
to intervene immediately to re-
move the possibility of a conflagra-
tion in the Middle East. President
Johnson, who is renowned for his
persuasive ability, should take the
lead in bringing the Arab and
Israeli leaders together to discuss
possibilities of lessening tension
in that explosive area."

In comparing the educational
standards enjoyed by Arabs in
Israel with thoSe of the non-
Israeli Arabs. Dr. Ben Meir cited
the statistics which indicate that
almost 70 per cent of Israeli Arabs
receive public school education
contrasted with less than 40 per
cent for Arabs in neighboring
cou ntries.

"The government of ISrael is
erecting a network of schools to
meet the needs of Arab and
Christian children," he reported.
The government is also subsidiz-
ing construction of Arab and
Christian religious institutions.
Rabbi Mordecai Kirshblum, past
president of the organization, ap-
pealed to the .Soviet government
to permit a representative body
of American Jewish leaderS "to
conduct a free, unfettered, and
uninhibited fact-finding study" of
the status. welfare and general

A strong appeal to the U.S.
State Department not to permit
American firms dealing with
Israel to be penalized by the
Arab boycott, was made in a
resolution adopted unanimously
by the more than 600 delegates.

Dr. Moses Rosen, chief rabbi of
Romania. reported to the conven-
tion that "the 100,000 Jews in
Romania enjoy firm religious and
cultural rights and participate in
the growth and development of
a flourishing economy." However,
he continued, there exists an over-
whelming shortage of ordained -

rabbis. qualified religious leaders

and properly trained supervisory
personnel in educational and social
welfare institutions.
The Romanian chief rabbi said
that "it should be the solemn duty
of the AmeriCan Jewish commit-.
nity which is the world reservoir
of spiritual resources and pos-
sesses great institutions of learn-
ing. to .establish lines of commu-
nication between the Western and
Eastern communities and thereby
bring a closer association and
spiritual ties between Romanian
and American Jewish communi-
ties."

fein, United Hias Service presi-

Jewish life there at a luncheon
tendered by United Hias leaders.
