Fisher, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, who will be the dinner chairman. The Prime Minister's Medal is the highest award for "service in the cause of Israel's development." Governor George Romney will be a special guest. He will head the civic, business, religious and communal leaders of Detroit and Michigan who will pay tribute to Borman. Richard Tucker, leading tenor of the Metropolitan Opera Com- pany, will be the guest artist. Participants in the program at the dinner honoring Borman will include Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, vice president of the Israel Bond Organization; Louis H. Boyar, chairman of the board of gover- nors; Samuel Rothberg, national campaign chairman; Rabbi Jacob E. Shaarey Zedek, David Saf- Pays Visit to Synagogue; Vows to Uphold Rights of All Citizens (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) PARIS—President Habib Bourgui- ba of Tunisia chose one of the oldest synagogues in the world— that on the Tunisian island of Djerba—as the site for a state- ment that his re- gime sought to protect the relig- ious rights of all Tunisians. The visit, made at the president's request, was be- lieved .to be the first to Jewish house of worship by a modern Arab ruler. Mem- bers of the Jew- ish communities of Tunis and Djerba, headed Bourguiba by Tunisian Chief Rabbi Mordecia Cohen, were present to receive President Bourguiba. Chief Rabbi Cohen presented to the president a nine-inch gold model of Aye Talah. At the syna- gogue entrance, a girl presented him with a bouquet. The president went inside and took his seat in the tebah, a small enclosure of latticed wooden walls from which the Tora is read. Chief Rabbi Cohen said in a sermon that when God made rulers of nations, he endowed them with wisdom and that the members of the 25-centuries old Jewish community of Djerba en- joyed liberty. He ended with a prayer for the Tunisian leader. A representative of the board said that there was increased ac- tivity in printing anti-Semitic pro- paganda in Sydney. The spokesman also warned the community against a small youth group going around among the Jewish community col- lecting money for a so-called "pro- tective society." Since then he has been assistant director gen- eral of the Foreign Office, Israel's first ambassador to Canada and has represented Israel at various international conferences.
