Rev. Hubert Locke to Talk at New Temple Services

Profs. Jay McCormack of Wayne
State University and Lawrence
Berkove of the University of Mich-
igan will discuss the Jew as a cul-
ture hero in the '60s 9 p.m. Tues-
day at Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
Discussion will focus on the
literary and social factors that
have made best sellers of many
recent books with Jewish themes
and Jewish protagonists.
Dr. Leonard Gordon, Michigan
area director of the AJCommittee,
will moderate this program, the
fifth in a series on the theme
"Change and Challenge — 1966"
co-sponsored by the AJCommittee
and Shaarey Zedek.

To Ring in New Year
at Cong. Bnai David

The Mr. and Mrs. Club of Cong.
Bnai David is planning its "Dec.
31 Gala" at the synagogue.
Dinner, name band, party favors
and a continental breakfast will

Rev. Hubert G. Locke, admin-
istrative assistant to the Detroit
Police commissioner, will deliver
a Sabbath sermon at The New
Temple 8:30 p.m. today. His topic
will be "Is Religion Really A
Force in Solving Social Prob-
lems?"
Rev. Locke serves as minister of
the Church of Christ of Conant
Gardens, is senior editor of the
Detroit Tribune, past director of
religious affairs, Wayne State Uni-
versity and immediate past direc-
tor of the Citizens' Committee for
Equal Opportunity.
Mrs. Lionel Finkelstein is chair-
man for the program which will
take place at Birmingham Unitar-
ian Church. The public is invited.
Following special Hanuka ser-

vices Dec. 9, congregational lead-
ers will present their goals in
education, social responsibility and
congregational excellence. Mrs.
Eugene Mitchell and Louis Golden
are serving as co-chairmen for the
evening. Speakers will include
Julian Scott, president of the con-
gregation, Mrs. Morris Mersky,
chairman of the religious school
committee, and Howard Green,
chairman of adult education.

Shomrey Emunah Party
to Feature Games, Prizes

The annual Hanuka party of
Cong. Shomrey Emunah will be
held 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the
synagogue.
There will be games, prizes and
entertainment. A U.S. Savings
Bond will be given as a prize, and
refreshments are being prepared
by the sisterhood under the leader-
ship of Mrs. Lillian Levin, presi-
dent, and Mrs. Fannie Laufer,
program chairman.
Proceeds will go toward the
maintenance of the synagogue.

Young Folks to Dance

PGASP (Post Graduate Adas
Shalom Presents) will swing to
international music at its folk
dance 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Adas
Shalom Synagogue. Young adults
age 20 to 30 are invited at a
nominal charge.
