By BENNETT CERF.

Mark Twain, like many other
famous humorists, had moments
of absolute despair and had to con-
tend with a long series of personal
misfortunes. Here are a few of the
more cynical Twain pronounce-
ments: "Truth is the most valuable
thing we have. Let us economize
it." "To be good is noble, but to
show others how to be good is
nobler — and a good deal less
trouble" . . . "If you pick up a
starving dog and make him pros-
perous, he will not bite you. This
is the principal difference between
a dog and a man."
QUICKIES:

Recent TV blooper: a flustered
Manhattan commentator was "de-
lighted" to introduce "The Duck
and Doochess of Windsor."
* * *
The reason most men in the front
row seats at sell-out musical hits
are bald-headed: they bought their
tickets from scalpers.
* * *
A pair of unusual classified ads
unearthed by George Christy:
1. From Williston, N.D.: "Want-

ed: husband for beautiful blonde,
18. Must have income to support
her in style she believes she was
born to—including minks, caviar,
and diamonds. Applicant please
write 'Desperate Father, Box 44.' "
2. From Salt Lake City: "Live-
stock for sale: Mexican burro, very
gentle, friendly. Can be seen at
Creek Road in Union, or heard
within a radius of three miles any
morning from 6:00 a.m."

A very fat lady was in a thought-
ful mood as she stepped off the
nickel scale at an amusement
park. "Heavier than ever, eh?"
sneered her unfeeling husband.
"Not at all," countered the fat
lady. "I've just figured from the
weight table printed on this ma-
chine that I should be four feet
taller."
* * *
Classified ad in a southern New
Jersey weekly: "Adolph, please
come back home. The children
miss you, the lawn hasn't been
mowed in three weeks, and the
garden needs a worm like you.
Your loving wife, Gretchen."
• *
A Mark Twain admonition: "Al-
ways tell the truth. It will please
some people and astonish the

rest."
