• Mouchette: Georg

A London Times obituary, eval-
uating the works of Georges Ber-
nanos (1888-1948), said that "lit-
erature for him was a kind of
sacrament." B e r n a n o s' "Mou-
chette," now available as a Holt,
Rinehart and Winston volume,
proves and emphasizes this de-
served tribute.
"Mouchette" is a short novel,
and it is a remarkably impressive
work. A literary gem, in a transla-
tion from the French by J. C.
Whitehouse, this novelette is a
very human document.
It has been called melodra-
matic. Actually, it is a most
dramatic work and its motiva-
tion is based on a young farmer
girl's distress, on the bitterness
of life that ends in self-destruc-
tion, while the craving for sur-
vival vanishes in a sea of pov-
erty and self-abnegation.
There is something deeply mov-
ing about this theme. It is a tragic
tale that is marked by much bit-
terness, yet there is something el-
evating in the literary approach
to a theme that leads only to death
