Ida Lieberman, Sarah Pinter, Charles Finkelstein, Family of the Late _Israel Cohen, Talmudic scholar who was a familiar figure in the center of Jewish life on Hastings St. 50 years ago, died Nov. 3 at age 87. Mr. Cohen, 18642 Tracey, started a Yiddish newspaper delivery route on that street during World War I, and subsequently, in the 1920s and '30s, took his route to the 12th Street area. A small, frail, grey-haired man, he delivered the Forward, Tog- Morgen Journal and Tageblatt to the homes of many families whose children are well known in Detroit communal and civic life. He numbered among his cus- tomers the Burdick family on Philadelphia; the Levin family on Virginia Park; the Shevitz family on Edison; the Weisswas- ser family on Taylor; the Karbal family on Blaine; the Sandler family on Euclid; the Bielfield family on Taylor. Devoutly Orthodox, he had ac- quired a reputation as a Talmudic scholar. Possessed of an unusual retentive memory, he was not dis- couraged by his failing eyesight, which, for the last 15 years had made it impossible for him to read the fine print of the books of Talmud. His lack of vision became a chal- lenge to him to memorize pages and pages of Talmud, and the scholars at the synagogue where he studied often found him run- ning ahead of them, even though they were reading while he was reciting from memory. He would spend hours on the telephone discussing Halakha with Rabbi Bakst of Yeshivath Beth Ye- hudah and then would sit for hours at a time repeating what he had learned until he mastered it and committed it to memory. In spite of his failing vision, he was a regular daily synagogue worshiper, recently at the Shom- rey Synagogue, and for about 30 years at the Taylor Street Shul. In order to cross Schaefer Hwy., he would call the shul before , leaving home and would be met by someone from the synagogue to assist him in crossing. He was active in the Yeshivath Beth. Yehudah and supported ye- shivot and charitable organizations throughout the country and in Israel. He is survived by a son, Sam, controller of Packer Markets; two brothers, Louis and Dave of Los Angeles; one sister and two grand- children. The Family of the Late EDWARD H.
