Israel's best, its national basket-
ball team, will open a five-game
tour of the United States at New
York's Madison S q u a r e Garden
Nov. 19. Its star is 6-8 Tanhum
Cohen-Mintz, Israel's greatest ath-
lete. Cohen-Mintz has been named
"Israel Athlete of the Year" four
times. After the U.S. visit, the Is-
raelis will fly to Bangkok, Thai-
land, to participate in the Fifth
Asian Games.
The national basketball team has
always been a source of pride for
Israel. In 1965 they placed sixth at
the European Championships in
Moscow, and Cohen-Mintz made the
all-star team. This summer the
squad defeated two American col-
lege clubs, the NCAA finalist, Ken-
tucky, 81-76, and Georgetown Col-
lege of Kentucky 83-81. The vic-
tories give Israel a valid claim to
the basketball championship of the
State of Kentucky, with possible
objections from Louisville Univer-
sity and Western Kentucky U.
ABC Freight Forwarders, coach
ed by former pro star Max Zaslof-
sky, will be Israel's first opponent
at the Garden. The contest will be
a preliminary to the National Bas-
ketball Association Knick-Chicago
game. All the other games on the
tour will likewise be prelims to
NBA games.
The rest of the itinerary includes
Boston, Celtics-St. Louis; Philadel-
phia, 76ers-San Francisco; and Los
Angeles, Lakers-St. Louis. A fifth
game may be played in Cincinnati
Nov. 30.
This will be the second visit to
the United States for the Israel
National Team. The first was in
1957 when the Israelis compiled a
4-3 record. Then, as now, the in-
vitation was extended by the Ama-
teur Athletic Union under the spon-
sorship of the U.S. Committee
Sports for Israel.

Defense is the big story of the
college football campaign, at least
for the Jewish players. Al Claman
of UCLA must be the smallest de-
fensive tackle on a nationally
ranked team. Claman, a junior
from Los Angeles, is just 5-10, 193
pounds. He makes up for his lack
of size with quickness and deter-
mination.
Mike Blatt, a junior from Key
West, Fla., makes the coaches at
Florida State smile. Blatt, a line-
backer, was outstanding in the
Seminoles' first two games. The
5-11, 203-pounder, won the weekly
"Savage Award" following the 21-
13 loss to Houston. The award is
given for the top defensive job by
a Florida State player. In the Miami
upset Blatt led his team with 10
tackles.
Florida State's other Jewish per-
former is sophomore guard Harvey
Zion from Atlanta.
The Seminoles also list two grad-
uate assistant coaches in Louis
Engleburg and Steve Goldman.
Bernie Yaffa, who starred for
Miami of Florida last year as
guard, is helping coach the Hur-
ricane frosh team.
Only Jewish player at Georgia
is defensive tackle Paul Hand-
macher from Atlanta.
Resurgent Temple is beating the
drums for defensive end Mike
Stromberg. Stromberg, a senior, is
considered one of the top defensive
men in the East.
Backing up the line at Princeton
is senior Ron Grossman, from Mt.
Carmel, Pa. A second-strong defen-
sive t a c k l e is sophomore Dick
Sandler from Levittown, N.Y.
Trying to hold the fort at Colum-
bia are linebacker Arnold Felsen-
feld and defensive back Dave Kof-
fler.
