RUMORS ARE TRUE that a
complete party planning service
from top to bottom will soon hit
the Detroit area . . . Never been
anything like it before here . . .
New York and Chicago have it . ,
Now Detroit will enjoy this fabu-
lous "from soup to nuts" way of
putting on affairs . . and, we
might add, it's about time !

phere . . . The service is excellent,
and the carry-out is exceptionally
fast . . . For folks who don't know,
there's another room to the right
as you enter, so don't get panicky
when the place looks overloaded
. . The other room is perfect for
teas, meetings and luncheons.

BAJA'S IN DEARBORN, - Tele-
graph and Michigan, is a $200,000
restaurant owned by John Baja,
once known as "Dearborn's un-
bossed councilman," leader of the
loyal opposition to Mayor Hubbard
. . His mother and father were
known to several generations of
high school students as Sugar
Bowl John and Sugar Bowl Mary
because, you guessed it, they ran
the Sugar Bowl, a confectionery
store across from the school . . .
When prohibition came to its un-
lamented end, Sugar Bowl John
and Sugar Bowl Mary gave up the
largely unprofitable pastime of
selling candy to kiddies and started
selling liquor and Romanian food
to the kiddies' parents . . . They
soon gained a Dearborn-wide repu-
tation for their good victuals . . .
In the meantime, sons Johnny and
Don were attending Fordson High
School, playing on the football
team and serving in the military
. . After a brief stint at Michi-
gan State, Johnny got married,
started rearing a family and en-
tered politics at the age of 24
. . . To everyone's surprise, he
was elected to the Dearborn coun-
cil . . He supported •himself by
working in his parents' restaurant
. . . But ambition burned brightly
within Johnny .. , He got the aid
of some friends and bankers and
built his beautiful restaurant . .
Baja's is a modern one-story build-
ing ... The floors are covered with
carpeting, and the walls are
covered with silk fabric or teak
. . . The chairs and tables are
teak wood . . . Specialities of the
house include charcoal-broiled
steak, live lobsters and chicken
paprikosh . , . The latter, we can
attest, is really excellent.

UNSUNG DELICATESSEN of
Oak Park is Katz's on Nine Mile
Rd. .. . Few places anywhere can
boast the fine corned beef served
by Jimmy and Sally Katz, and
their delly easily ranks among the
tops in either Detroit or suburbs.

WE TOOK 5-YEAR OLD son
Scott to Uncle John's Pancake
House on West Eight Mile Rd.,
recently, and the waitress brought
him lots of good things to eat . .
As a reward, Scott was informed
that if he ate everything she would
give him some goodies as a prize
. . . She kept her word, but Scott
insisted that the girl had forgotten
something . .. When the waitress
couldn't imagine wha
t was,
Scott explained, "Look at my dad-
dy's
He ate more than
did and smokes cigars !"
