security put a watch on Elliott
when he and his wife came to Is-
rael as tourists. They started the
surveillance after learning that
Elliott was trying to recruit former
experts in explosives among
friends of Elliott's wife, according
to the Israeli police. Mrs. Elliott,
a former Israeli citizen, is now an
Austrian citizen, police said.
The police said that Elliott ap-
parently learned that he was be-
ing watched and left Israel on
Oct. 13, leaving his wife behind.
The police then moved on and ar-
rested four Israelis and Mrs. El-
liott. All five were released on
bail after being charged with con-
spiring against a friendly nation.
Details were then reported by the
Israel Foreign Ministry to the
United States and Zambia, and the
arrests in the United States fol-
lowed.
Four of the men arrested in Israel
were Yitzhak Berkowitz, a former
member of the underground Stern
group; Benjamin Edutti, a former
member of the underground Irgun;
Efraim Roman and Raphael Zori-
ano. The sixth Israeli was arrested
Wednesday and has not yet been
named. The four Israelis and Mrs.
Elliott stood mute during arraign-
ment. -
The Israeli police said that
Elliott visited Israel twice in his
efforts to enlist Israelis in his
plan.
Stephen E. Kaufman, assistant
U. S. attorney, said in reporting on
the two arrests in New York, that
the two defendants reportedly of-
fered two Miami men $25,000 plus
expenses to blow up the bridge.
The Miamians who were named as
co-conspirators but not as defen-
dants informed the Federal Bureau
of Investigation about the ap-

It was reported Wednesday that
Israel sent a special emissary to

TEL AVIV — Israeli police of-
ficials said Tuesday that the Is-
raeli security services tipped off
United States and Zambian
authorities about an international
plot to blow up a Zambian bridge,
in which six persons have been
arrested in Israel and two in the
United States.
According to authorities, the goal
of the plot was to destroy a bridge
which is essential to the trans-
port of Zambian copper and thus
to affect the world price of the
meta 1. Israeli officials had in-
tended to keep the story secret,
but after the United States author-
ities revealed contacts between Is-
raelis and Americans in the plot,
the Israeli police revealed Israeli's
detective Work against the alleged
plotters.
As pieced together from Is-
raeli and United States sources,
Joy Aubrey Elliott, a traveling
representative of the Friedrich
Zoellner Corp., a metals com-
pany associated with a German
concern, was alleged to be the
key personality in the plot.
He and Rolf Duenbier, a vice
president of the metals firm, were
arraigned Monday in New York
City before U.S. Commissioner
Earle N. Bishopp, on charges of
having conspired in the United
States to injure or destroy prop-
erty in a foreign country, a viola-
tion of the U.S. Neutrality Act.
Duenbier, a German-born natur-
alized citizen, was held on $20,000
bail. Elliott was held on $50,000
bail.

Chess King Loses
by Default; Reds
Nix Sabbath Delay

HAVANA — The Russian team
playing at the world chess Olym-
piad refused to grant a two-hour
postponement of a match for the
Jewish Sabbath last weekend and
thus won four points from the
U.S. team by default.
The U.S. team requested the
postponement when U.S. champion
Bobby Fischer declined to play on
the Sabbath. Russia won by default
because the American team failed
to appear at the scheduled time for
the match between Fischer, seven-
time U.S. champion, and the world
champion Tigran Petrosian.
The Russians refused on the
grounds that Olympiad rules
called for matches to be played
from 4 to 9 p.m. each day. Post-
ponement by two hours would
have put the match after dusk,
, the end of the Sabbath.
The Russians thus were put into
the lead of Group A competition
with 61/2 points.
Fischer challenged Soviet chess
champion Leonid Stein to a 10-
match contest in Havana next
year. Although Stein at first turned
down the challenge, voiced in front
of Premier Fidel Castro at an offi-
cial reception for Olympiad par-
ticipants, he later changed his
mind and accepted the challenge.

New Book Exposes Birchers
Leading Senate opponents of the
John Birch Society have welcomed
a smashing new indictment of the
John Birch Society—"Peddlers of
Fear"—a book exposing the right-
wing group published by Lynnross
and written by A. Waldor.
An analogy comparing the tac-
tics of the Communists with those
of the Birchites is drawn by Wal-
dor. The purpose of his book is to
present "a factual portrayal of an
organization conceived in secrecy
and cloaked with what appear to
be patriotic objectives."
