Erhard Successor
to Be Ex-Nazi?

BONN — An ex-Nazi may suc-
ceed West German Chancellor
Ludwig Erhard.
Kurt Georg Kiesinger, backed
by a powerful Gaullist faction, won
the endorsement Wednesday of the
Bavarian wing of Erhard's Christ-
ian Democrats. The minister presi-
dent of Baden-Wurtemberg, he was
holding a solid block of 49 votes
out of a total 245 in the loosely
knit party.
The Bavarians' backing came
a few hours after Kiesinger de-
fended himself against charges
that he had held a high post
under the Nazis.
He said he joined the Nazi Party
in 1933, the year Hitler came to
power. He stated he became dis-
illusioned the next year, but did
not say he quit the party.
Erhard has said he is ready to
step down after three years in
office. His coalition with the Free
Democrats broke up Oct. 27.

Speer Admits:
`No Absolution'

(Continued from Page 1)
"There is nothing that can ab-
solve me," he added in the inter-
view, after asserting that "it was
made clear at Nuremberg and the
court accepted it that I did not
know about the concentration
camps" and that he was "overcome
when we were forced to look at
the films of those camps in court."
Spear told the interviewer that
no German could complain about
the Nuremberg trials and that he
welcomed the trials "as the first
positive fact that took some of the
collective guilt from the German
people and apportioned it squarely
on the shoulders of the leadership."
He then discussed the fate of
European Jewry "with a kind of
compulsion," according to the in-
terviewer, declaring that "I have
a conscience about the Jews and
it is one of the hardest thing I
have to bear." He added that "I
think of it constantly."

W. Ontario Jews Seek
Removal of Religion
From Public Schools

CHATHAM, Ont. (JTA) —
Spokesmen for three Jewish com-
munities in Western Ontario sub-
mitted briefs to a government com-
mittee on religious education urg-
ing removal of religious courses
from public schools in Ontario.
Christian spokesmen asked for
retention of the courses, and some
asked for their expansion. The
three Jewish communities were
those of London, Chatham and
Windsor.
In asking for removal of the
religion course, first introduced in
1944, the three Jewish leaders
cited a statement by a clergyman
teaching the course in a Chatham
public school who stated: "Anyone
not believing in Christianity is a
heathen."
