Mayor of Haifa to Speak Nov. 23
at Hai Award Israel Bond Luncheon

The Hai Award luncheon spon-
sored by the Detroit Israel Bond
Women's Division, noon, Nov.
23, at the Shaarey Zedek, will fea-
ture Mayor Abba Khoushy of Haifa

and worked at draining Israel's
swamps and building her roads. He
looks back on 30 years of hard
work in Israel as stevedore, road
laborer, secretary-general of the
Haifa Workers' Council and mem-
ber of the first Knesset. Haifa now
has some 200,000 inhabitants, but
Mayor Khoushy believes that the
population will increase to 500,000.
The harbor itself, with the aid of
Israel Bond dollars, has been en-
larged so that its capacity has in-
creased from 1,300,000 to 3,000,000
tons a year.
Highlighting the luncheon will
be a Woman of Valor award and
awards to Chen volunteers, spon-
sors and other supporters of the
Israel Bond cause. For tickets call
the Israel Bond office, DI 1-5707.

Company, will be the guest artist

ing Abraham Borman, prominent
Detroit businessman, civic and
humanitarian leader, who will re-

Medal, it has been announced by
Max M. Fisher, general chairman
of the United Jewish Appeal, who
is serving as dinner chairman.
The dinner tribute and concert
is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec.
13, at Cobo Hall. A capacity
attendance is expected, headed
by a distinguished representative
of the Prime Minister of Israel and
by outstanding civic, religious,
business and communal leaders
of Detroit and Michigan.
Following a sensational debut at
New York's Metropolitan Opera
House almost 22 years ago, Tucker
has made some 500 appearances
with the Metropolitan at its home
theater and on tour, and has
sung 27 leading roles of the tenor
repertoire.
Originally, his vocal training
was not aimed at an operatic
career, but rather toward be-
coming a cantor, or musical
minister of his faith. His goal
was soon achieved and he had,
in fact, reached one of Conserva-
tive Judaism's top cantorial
posts, at the Brooklyn Jewish
Center, when Paul Althouse, the
celebrated Metropolitan Opera
