Nazi-nunter Wiesenthal Says 1
Austria Harbors Murderers

VIENNA (JTA) — About 1,100
Austrians living as free men in
this country are implicated in the
Nazi wartime mass murders of
European Jews, and about 100 of
them are in the Austrian police
force, Simon Wiesenthal, head of
the Jewish Documentation Center

Talks Get Under Way
for Desalination Project

WASHLNGTON (JTA) — The
first exploratory talk on imple-
mentation of a joint American-
Israeli nuclear desalination pro-
ject took place here Wednesday
when Ephraim Ben Arzi, newly ap-
pointed Israeli desalination co-
ordinator, met here with U.S.
Ambassador-at-large Ellsworth
Bunker.
Bunker was personally desig-
nated by President Lyndon B.
Johnson to evaluate the long-de-
layed undertaking and make
recommendations. The plan was
declared feasible by a joint study
group but a question of financing
remained along with other econ-
omic issues.

presented to the Austrian govern-
ment.
He also charged that most of the
Austrian murderers had never
stood trial.
About half of the Six Million
who were murdered during
World War II, perished at the
hands of Nazis in Austria, he
said.
"I would be satisfied if the
Austrian judiciary worked as effi-
ciently as the Germans concern-
ing war crimes," said Wiesenthal,
adding that the prosecuting of Nazi
criminals is particularly inefficient
in Austria.
He demanded that the interior
ministry enlarge its department
that deals with war crimes and
called for a trial by judge rather
than jurors. He also proposed a
new law to exclude former Nazis
and Nazi victims from serving on
such juries.
Wiesenthal said that Austrian
authorities had ignored evidence
supplied by German prosecutors
and the German Central Office for
the Investigation of War Crimes.
Wiesenthal said "A u s t r i a n s
should feel morally obliged to
show the world they do not want
murderers in their midst."

British Chief Rabbi
Warns American Jewry

on Danger of 'Freedom'

BOSTON (JTA) — American
Jewry, like Jewry the world over,
faces the problem of saving Juda-
ism itself, Rabbi Immanuel Jako-
bovits, the newly elected chief
rabbi of the British Common-
wealth, told an audience of 750
here Sunday night, celebrating the
25th anniversary of the Associated
Synagogues of Massachusetts.
"The affluence and freedom
that exists for Jews in this coun-
try," he declared, "is as big a fac-
tor in the decline of Judaism as is
the repression behind the Iron
Curtain. American Jews are more
familiar with the stars of Holly-
wood than with the revered names
of the Bible or with the Jewish
sages.
"We must imbue Jews with a
sense of urgency about main-
taining Judaism, the same sense
of urgency that marked the
Zionist movement that led to the
formation of the State of Israel."
Stressing the primacy of Jewish
education, Rabbi Jakobovits, how-
ever, said he was hopeful of Juda-
ism's future. "I believe," he de-
clared, "we have reached the bot-
tom of the estrangement, and a
resurgence is taking place."
The freedom which Jewish
youth is experiencing on the
American campuses, he said, "is
leading them to a stronger belief
in the credo of their religion."

all of us on Yom Kippur. Still
others claim that the fast was in-
stituted so as to keep the bride
and groom sober and in full
presence of mind so that the cere-

mony would command their full
faculties and complete free will,
since the absence of such free
will which might come about in a
state of intoxication would cast
doubts on the validity of the
marriage.
