Arthur Miller's 'Death of Salesman'

By MAL ABRAMS
"Death of a Salesman" came to
life Saturday in a fine presenta-
tion at the Jewish Center.
Arthur Miller's story of Willie
Loman is the American tragedy of
average men spurred by a go-get-
ter myth, which they can attain
only in their dreams.
Willie is an unfaithful husband
and a blowhard father, yet the
audience should find love and pity
for him. Leo Mogill achieves this.
However, in his portrayal as Willie
a certain amount of the charac-
ter's dignity seems to be lacking.
Willie's sons are portrayed by
Hal Youngblood and Conrad Ro-
berts, respectively. Roberts, a little
too stiff in the beginning, loosens
up to the part of the girl-chasing,
sheep-doggish Happy.
Youngblood, in his first Cen-
ter Theater appearance, gives
an outstanding performance as
the rebellious Biff. As the only
character who ever really finds
himself, he is particularly strong
in his verbal battles with Willie.
The part of Willie's wife is play-
ed by June Snow. Although slight-
ly handicapped by her young voice,
she gives an excellent portrayal of
the abused but forever-under-
standing wife.
Ralph Bernstein as the card-
playing next-door neighbor is well
suited, as he appears a caricature
of everybody's next-door neigh-
bor. Unfortunately, his character
does not appear quite strong
enough to prepare the audience
for the moving requiem speech
"Nobody dast blame this man."

TZ

social hall.
Rabbi Benjamin H. Gorrelick
will speak. Abe Halem will pre-
side. Refreshments will be served.
The public is invited.

Gene Rosenberg as the waiter,
in his Center Theater tradition
provides the comic relief.

William Katzman's set design
is abstractly modern and com-
bined with Craig Carnick's light-
ing makes the transitions from
past to present and hallucina-
tions flow smoothly.
The action of the play moves

very well, and under the director-
ship of Joseph French the Cen-
ter Theater has reaffirmed its posi-
tion as one of the outstanding
community stage groups in De-

troit.

Other performances will be held
Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Young Israel Cites

Irving Moskovitz

Irving M. Moskovitz will be cited

Moskovitz, affiliated with the
Young Israel movement for many

his family, in the successful fund-
raising campaign of the Northwest
branch this year.

urbs, as well as the mother branch,
Young Israel of Detroit, will send
their presidents and members to
the branch dinner. Dignitaries

by national President Abe Saper-
stein, will attend.

evening, and Rabbi Samuel H.
Prero, spiritual leader of t h e
branch and president of the Metro.
politan Council of Young Israel,

velop youth branches in the South-
field area.

vitz and Son

ry board to aid in the development
