AJ Committee Establishes Department Pick Koufax Again
NEW YORK—Sandy Koufax,

CLEVELAND — The increasing
concern of American Jews about
the problems of the cities ..vas re-
flected when the American Jewish
Committee announced the estab-
lishment of a department of educa-
tion and urban programing.
The announcement, made by Dr.
John Slawson, executive vice pres-
ident, at the closing session of the
annual meeting of the national ex-
ecutive board, top policy-making
body, marks a major step in the
history of the agency.
"No longer can American Jews
solve their problems in isolation,
apart from such complex urban
concerns as education, housing,
jobs, and the other human rela-
tions problems of our metropol-
itan communities," Dr. Slawson
explained.
"In pursuing our aims, we
recognize that our goals can
. hardly be achieved in these
complex gtimes through a frag-
mented attack on symptoms. We
must organize our future pro-
grams by looking upon the met-
opolis as an inter-related organ-
ism affecting profoundly our
daily lives."'
Dr. Slawson added that Amer-
ica's Jews are among the most
urban groups of the population.
According to latest U.S. figures, 87
per cent of all Jews aged 14 and
over live in urbanized area of 250,-
000 population or more. The com-
parable figure for Roman Catholics
is 54 per cent, for white Protest-

ants it is 27 per cent, and for non-
white Protestants, 45 per cent.
To head the new department, Dr.
Slawson appoint-
ed Irving M. Le-
vine, who for the
past two years
has been director
of community re-
lations for the
New York Area
for the American
Jewish Commit-
tee. Prior to that,
he served as di-
rector of AJC'
Ohio area office,
stationed in Cleve-

Bormann's Niece Says
Nazi Doctor in Ghana
He's Alive in S. America Admits Sterilizing Jews

ROME (JTA)-1VIariin Bormann,
first deputy to Adolf Hitler, was
again reported here to be alive,
and probably safe in South
America.
In an interview published in the
Milan weekly, Oggi, Giselle Bor-
mann, a niece of the notorious war-
time Nazi, was quoted as saying
that her uncle was still alive, and
that "he was too much of a coward
to kill himself." She said there
were still many Nazis in South
America willing to help him to live
under a fictitious name.
Giselle Bormann is the daughter
of the late Richard Bormann, a
brother of Martin. She recently
settled in Rome.
Meanwhile, it was officially an-
nounced in Frankfurt that Ger-
hard Bohne, 64, an accused Nazi
mass murderer, will be extradited
from Argentina to face trial here
for war crimes. He fled to South
America in 1963 to escape prosecu-
tion in West Germany.

ACCRA, Ghana (JTA) — Dr.
Horst Schumann, a former Nazi
physician charged with killing
30,000 Jews and 100,000 inmates of
mental hospitals, admitted here
that he supervised the killing by
gas of "maybe 80,000 persons—I
have no figures."
Testifying in Ghana's court of
appeals in his appeal against an
extradition request by the West
German government, Schumann
said he carried out the killings on
Hitler's orders.
Answering the charges that he
killed 30,000 Jews by mass sterili-
zation, he said he carried out the
program out of fear of what would
happen to him if he did not.
