THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Backlash, War Nerves 34—Friday, November 4, 1966 Mizrachi Women Urge Security Council Action WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Mizrachi Women's Organization of America adopted a resolution urg- ing the United Nations Security Council to take "firm, vigorous and undiluted action to curb Syrian terrorism." The resolution, adopted at the close of the keynote session of the 41st annual national convention of the group, appealed to the UN for "speed and urgent consideration to reduce growing tension in the Middle East." More than 1,000 delegate s, representing 50,000 members in 37 states, recorded appreciation of the U.S. role in "seeking a reasonable resolution to end acts of infiltration, aggres- sion, and hostility by Syrian-based terrorists." The organization adopted a budget of $1,320,000 to meet child- care; social service and vocational education needs in Israel during the next 12 months, and to continue its educational and cultural activi- ties in the U.S. through 1967. Delegates also voted $125,000 for the continuation of services to the disadvantaged. Other allocations were $200,000 to continue an af- forestation, road building and land reclamation project in Galilee through the Jewish National Fund; $130,000 for cultural, educational and youth activities in the United States, and $100,000 for adminis- trative expenses in Israel and the United States. Mrs. Aaron Leifer, of Brooklyn, was elected national president of the organization. Leading to McCarthyism? NEW YORK (JTA)—Rabbi Ar- thur J. Lelyveld, president of the American Jewish Congress, warn- ed Sunday that the United States faced the prospect of another bout with McCarthyism as a result of war nerves and white backlash. In his speech, before the Stephen S. Wise Awards dinner here, he warned of "strains" resulting from America's involvement in Vietnam. and "hostile reactions" to Negro demands for integration. Rabbi Lelyveld spoke in present- ing the 1966 Stephen S. Wise Award to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas. Another Stephen S. Wise medallion was presented to Frank Abrams of New York, "for strengthening Jew- ish life." Abrams is national treasurer of the Congress. 2 Residents of Aged Home in South Africa Slain CAPE TOWN, South Africa (JTA) —Two residents of the Jewish Aged Home here, Mrs. Anne Jacques, 72, and Mrs. Elda Zabow, 64, were found murdered in the room they shared, with their throats cut.
