LETTER BOX

Beth Hillel Rabbi
Takes Issue With
Triennial Cycle

Editor, The Jewish News:
Allow me to comment on the
report that Beth Moses Synagogue
has decided to introduce the tri-
ennial system of the reading of
the Tora.
Maimonides in his authoritative
code Mishna Tora, Chapter 13 of
Hilhot Tefila, states "the straight
forward practice in all of Israel
is to complete the Tora reading
within one year, beginning with
the Sabbath after Sukkot and read-
ing the portion of Bereshit . and
completing the Tora reading at the
time of Sukkot. There are those

who complete the Tora reading

within three years, but it is not
the straightforward practice (Min-
hag Poshut)."
While there was an ancient
minhag in Palestine that followed
the triennial cycle, obviously it
remained only a local rule and
was never adopted by our an-
cestors, who transmitted to us
the annual cycle, which is still
in force today the world over..
This cycle allows, among other
things, for the annual Simhat Tora
celebration, when the reading of
the Tora is concluded and keeps
intact Ezra's decree that the por-
tion of Atem Nitzovim should al-
ways be read immediately before
Rosh Hashana. An innovation of
this system is thus a presumptuous
breach of tradition.
Similarly, the elimination of the
repetition of the Mussaf Amida
constitutes an unwarranted change
of established usage and law, one
