Co-op Council—Clearinghouse
.
For Needy of All Ages in Detroit

Forty years ago, the League of
Jewish Women's Organizations de-
cided they must do something to
help the needy, the ill and the
maimed. So they formed the Co-
operative Council.
Made up of 16 charity groups
who service the needy, the Co-op
Council members meet once a
month to screen cases, their coop-
erative efforts helping to prevent
duplication.
Each group has a unique func-
tion. One group devotes its ener-
gies to infants and children up to
5 years of age. Another helps those

from 5 to 16. Care of the aging is
the project of still another group.
One organization provides medica-
tion for all ages and another pro-
vides funds for rent, light, heat
and even moving a family if neces-
sary. There is a group whose area
is help to war veterans.
Cases come to the attention of
Co-operative Council through pro-
fessional agencies, rabbis, neigh-
bors and friends who see people
in need.
Should an emergency arise be-
tween meetings, the chairman is
called, and she contacts the case
worker of the groups who would
be responsible for meeting the
needs of the case.
Co-operative Council is the only
clearing house of its kind to ren-
der such special service.
Mrs. Marvin B. Levy is presi-
dent of the League of Jewish
Women, and Mrs. Jules Sanders
'chairman of Co-operative Council.
An open meeting of Co-operative
Council will be held 12:15 p.m.
Thursday at Cong. Bnai Moshe.
Charlotte Hyams, city editor of
The Jewish News, will present
some observations of one aspect of
Co-operative Council's work: the
annual seder luncheon for patients
from the state's mental hospitals.
A petite lunch will be served.
