Prof. Liptzin Views `Reality' in Israel
From Viewpoint of an Immigrant

By MAL ABRAMS
"Israel is not for young people
who have material interests nor
older people without capital." This
was the sentiment expressed by
Prof. Sol Liptzin of the Technion,
Israel Institute of Science, in an
address Oct. 14 at the Sholem Alei-
chem Institute.
Prof. Liptzin is the author of sev-
eral books, including "Generation
of Decision," "Jewish Rejuvenation
in America" and his latest work,
"The Jew in American Litera-
ture." Before moving to Israel he
was chairman of the department of
Germanic and Slavic languages at
the City College of New York.
Drawing on the personal experi-
ences of his own move five years
ago, Dr. Liptzin spoke on "Grow-
ing Roots in Israel."
The expense of city living and
the hardship of kibbutz living,
make it necessary that immi-
grants are either young idealists
or well-to-do people, he said,
adding that "Israeli reality will
defeat most Americans who try
to settle there."
For examples Prof. Liptzin point-
ed out that apartments cost as
much as houses in Detroit and that
kibbutz workers must sometimes
toil in 110-degree heat.
The beginning is the hardest,
Prof. Liptzin said, but "if you can
survive a year or two in pergatory,
you will obtain a bit of paradise."
The American Jew must adopt
the Israeli personality to be happy
in Israel, he said. Once he does
this, he will discover "the simple

Prof. Liptzin said he would like
to see 1 per cent of America's Jews
migrating to Israel each year. But
the figure falls even short of one
in a thousand, or 6,000 per year.
The lack of young people is par-
ticularly distressing, he stated.
Prof. Liptzin said he feels the
perfect climax to a Jewish educa-
tion is a trip to Israel. Further "it
is an excellent remedy for the drift
away from Judaism."
At a banquet Saturday night at
the Institute, Prof. Liptzin spoke
on "Growing Jewish Roots in
America."
