Beth Moses Starts 'Triennial System' of Reading Tora
The ancient triennial system of
reading one-third of the weekly
Scripture portion at services has
been introduced at Beth Moses
Synagogue by Rabbi A. Irving
Schnipper.

understanding and a deeper in-

mainder of the weekly reading a
Bible study session on the portion
a half hour prior to its reading.
All worshipers are provided with
a Hertz humash, which is used as
the text.

vative synagogue in the North-
west area to change over to the
triennial system (Beth Shalom
of Oak Park also uses the sys-
tem) which was used in ancient
Palestine (T r a c t ate Megilla
27B), instead of the one-year
cycle of reading followed in
synagogues world wide.
advised of the reading schedule in
the synagogue newsletter.

of the repetition of the Musaf
Amida and the introduction of
prayer for silent meditation.
Rabbi Schnipper said the system
of reading the entire Tora now
used in most Conservative syna-
gogues was begun in the Babylon-
ian exile and introduced on Ezra's
return to Palestine.
The introduction of the triennial
system will involve no conflict with
Jewish religious practices, such as
the holidays, he said, and the
members of the congregation are
