WHAT IS THE CITY OF HOPE!

The City of Hope is a pilot Medical Center.

The functions of a pilot are to guide, steer

These are the objectives of the

The City of Hope is a Nonsectarian, FREE National Medical Center

Because of the dedicated spirit of all who sup-

Advancements in diagnostic, surgical and other therapeutic

Since its founding in 1913, the City of Hope has never
presented a bill to a patient for services regardless of
length of stay or of the complicated treatment involved.
The City of Hope was founded on faith — the faith
that Man is, indeed, his brother's keeper and is ever
striving to restore the afflicted to the
measure
of health, to their families, and to their social and
economic ways of life.

A 90 acre complex of hospitals, laboratories and other
buildings on beautifully landscaped grounds stand as a
permanent recognition to these inspiring objectives.

"Isn't the City of Hope really a 'charity institution'?"

No, because social justice—not handout charity—is a City of
Hope principle . . . a belief that everyone is entitled to the
finest medical care regardless of limited economic circum-
stances.

There are no wards—all patients are guests in private or semi-
private rooms. Patients order their meals from daily menus.
No room is without TV or radio.

Care and treatment are accorded every patient with fullest
regard for the dignity of each an a human being . . . as a man,
woman or child possessing every human right, privilege and
prerogative which no other human may deny!

Unique in American hospital annals is the City of Hope's famed
Hope Village of modern, private apartments where patients
and kin from near or far may live together as the medical
regimen allows. This is one of many examples of "family-
centered medicine"—a humanitarian concept of providing all
physical and emotional support possible—piloted at the City
of Hope.

The Parent Participation Program is under continuing

study through an unusual grant from the National Insti-

tute of Mental Health. Thus, hospitals everywhere may

ultimately benefit from this and other pilot programs in

HOW ARE PATIENTS ADMITTED TO THE CITY OF HOPE!

Patients are admitted on the basis of (a) medical and (b) economic eligibility
and of course on (c) the availability of beds.

Initial requirement is a referral by a private physician to assure that the
applicant comes within the medical scope of the City of Hope and can be
offered some definite therapy for relief or cure. Only in this way can medical
eligibility be determined.

Economic eligibility simply means that the applicant is unable to afford the
full costs of care in a private medical facility. It is a fundamental principle of
the City of Hope that patients should not be pauperized as a prerequisite for
admission.

HOW IS THE CITY OF HOPE PILOTING IN RESEARCH!

in recent years, City of Hope research workers
... opened the way for scientists everywhere a new approach to body enzymes as
diagnostic tools.
... were first in the world to make hemoglobin under test-tube conditions.
. , were first to reverse, even partially, the damaging effects of arterioscler-
osis in animals by chemical means — thus suggesting possible prevention of
heart attacks by blocking cholesterol formation.
. originated a "trapdoor" procedure in breast cancer surgery saving precious
operating time.
... revealed how blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and enter the

bloodstream.
