Ida Solomon Dead at 83; 'Driving
Force' Behind Chesed shel Emes

Ida Solomon, president of the
Ladies Auxiliary of the Hebrew
Benevolent Society over 30 years,
died Tuesday at age 83.
Mrs. Solomon reorganized the
auxiliary in 1936,the year her hus-
band Harry died. He had been the
president of thesociety (Chesed
shel Emes) for10 years.
A member of the society board
of directors, Mrs. Solomon was not
one to belong inname only. Rabbi
Israel Rockove, executive head of
Chesed shel Eines, described her

Leon Sourasky Dies at 77

MEXICO CITY (JTA) — Leon
Sourasky, one of the pioneers of
the Mexican Jewish community,
died here at the age of 77. Born
in Bialystok, Mr. Sourasky lived in
England and then in the United
States before emigrating to Mexico
in 1917. A founder of some of the
earliest Jewish social and philan-
thropic institutions here, Mr. Sour-
asky served as pNesident of the
Jewish Relief Socie\ and of the
Society for the Study of the His-
tory of Mexican Jewry. He was the
author of "A History of Mexican
Jewry."

George Vandenbergh, '72,
Dutch Lawyer, Astronomer

AMSTERDAM, (JTA) — Prof.
George Vandenbergh, a Jewish
lawyer, politician and astronomer,
died here at age 76. The grandson
of the founder of the worldwide
Unilever company, he was also a
former member of the Dutch Par-
liament and of the Amsterdam
Town Council.

Mrs. Solomon, 13225 S. Norfolk,
was organizer and president for
more than 50 years of the Eastern
Ladies Society, a member of Tur-
over Aid Society and of Lechem
Aneeim, a group aiding the poor.
Born in Russia, Mrs. Solomon lived
in Detroit 55 years, always assist-
ing newcomers to this country.
She is survived by six daughters,
Mrs. Philip (Jessie) Gorman of
Los Angeles, Mrs. Joseph (Sally)
Chodoroff, Mrs. Hyman (Rose)
Rudolph, Mrs. Hyman (Ann)
Krupp, Mrs. Leo (Gertrude) Lu-
betsky and Mrs. Jack (Belle) Litin-
sky; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-
grandchildren. She also was mother
of the late Ben J. Solomon.

Dr. Sidenberg, 66;
Headed Dental Group

Dr. Bennett R. Sidenberg, den-
tist for 42 years with offices at
15121 W. McNichols, died Sunday
at age 66.
Dr. Sidenberg, 828 S. Woodward,
Royal Oak, was past international
president of Alpha Omega dental
fraternity, as well as chairman
of the education commission of
the Detroit Dental Society and
other committees. He was a mem-
ber of Bnai Brith.
Born in Toronto, Dr. Sidenberg
was a graduate of the University
of Toronto in 1924. He came to
Detroit in that year to establish
his practice.
Survivors are his wife, Sonia;
and two brothers, Dr. Irwin of
Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Dr. Rob-
ert of Toronto. Interment was in
Toronto.
