Jewish Veterans Urge
Disavowal of Birchers

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
Jewish War Veterans of the United
States called on candidates for po-
litical office in next month's elec-
tions to disavow the John Birch
Society.
Malcolm A. Tarlov, national
commander of the JWV, announc-
ed that the JWV had been inform-
ed that some candidates already
have heeded the JWV request to
repudiate the organization which
"practices anti-Americanism under
the guise of protecting America."
He said that, in the JWV View,
candidates must do more than shun
affiliation with the John Birch
Society. "They should take the
same forthright stand against it
as they do against communism.
This is the only way to crush this
conspiratorial menace which feeds
on fear and hate."

LBJ's View on Dissent 'Clarified' by an Aide

WASHINGTON (JTA)—A White
House aide has described as "whol-
ly fanciful" inferences that Presi-
dent Johnson ever had "linked
American Jewish support for this
country's struggle in Vietnam with
continued United States support for
Israel."
The statement was made by
Harry C. McPherson, special coun-
sel to the President, in a letter to
Peter J. M o 1 a y of Cleveland
Heights, 0., a college student.
Malay had written to the Presi-
dent, asking for a clarification of
the controversy which erupted last
month after a Jewish War Veterans
delegation met with the President
at the White House.
After the JWV meeting with the
President, Malcolm Tarlov, JWV
commander, told White House cor-
