Interfaith Program
Explores Issues in
the Community

All of Detroit's organized relig-
ious affiliations will join efforts
in a new broadcast venture, "Con-
tact WJR," to be presented 6:30
p.m. Sundays starting this week-
end.
The Jewish Community Council,
Roman Catholic Archdiocese, East_
ern Orthodox Church and Council
of Churches will sponsor the live
broadcasts dealing with community
issues in which the groups can
play some part.
Mayor Cavanagh will open the
program with a statement on the
problems of law enforcement. Dis-
cussion of the issue will follow,
with participants John Kiefer, at-
torney and leader in the Arch-
bishop's Committee on Human Re-
lations, • and Lawrence Gubow,
chairman of the community rela-
tions committee of the Jewish Com-
munity Council and U.S. attorney
in the Eastern District of Mich-
igan.
Station announcer Hal Young-
blood will be host each week for
the program, which will include
dramatic presentations, open
telephone lines and other for-
mats, as well as discussions.
Series programing has been by
a joint committee consisting of
William Coughlin of the archdio-
cese; Clement Lee of the Lutheran
Center; Evelyn Orbach of the Jew-
ish Community Council; Thomas
Ruffin of the Eastern- Orthodox
Church; Edward B. Willingham
Jr. of the Detroit Council of
Churches; and Robert Wollard of
the Episcopal Diocese.
For many years, WJR present-
ed a weekly program, "Chapel
Hour," featuring clergymen of all
denominations. With the new pro-
gram, the "Chapel Hour" worship
format has been dropped.
