This year's banquet marks the

S t at e. Bar-Ilan
had a provisional
charter granted

has visited Bar-Han and is well

The British Company that makes
medals announced its intention to
mint the coin, which, after the
destruction of the Temple in 70
AD, could not be minted by the
Jews, by order of the Roman
conquerors.

The coin was used not only to
buy goods but also to pay the
priests for their services.
The shekels were designed by
Vivian Cohen, a London antique
,coin dealer, who said he got the
idea from the necessity of provid-
ing silver coins for the pidyon
haben—the redemption of the first-
born son.
According to the laws of
Moses, a child must be redeemed
from service to God by a pay-
ment to the priest of five silver
shekels on the 31st day after
it was born.

Recently Bar-Ilan was granted a
loan of $1,000,000, through A.I.D.,
for a period of 20 years, with an
exceptionally low interest rate.
Phillip Stollman, chairman of
the board of trustees, announces
that this year's banquet commit-
tee is now in formation and will
be announced shortly.
Bar-Ilan has a student body of
2,500. This year there were more
than 2,000 applications for admis-
sion, but only a fraction of them
could be accepted due to lack of
facilities. New buildings are under
construction on the campus, among
them a library is near completion,
and a building for social sciences
and classrooms.
