Warren 581-5040 no one under Danny Raskin's NEW YORK-The Jewish Mu- ' seum opened Tuesday night an ex- ' hibit of photographs, paintings, documents, posters and voice tapes portraying "the Lower East Side, Portal in American Life" (1870- 1924) of the Immigrant Jews who settled in that part of Manhattan. One of the highlights is a film of Zero Mostel reading, mostly in English, letters from the Bintel Brief, the complaints and queries sent in by readers of the Jewish Daily Forward. The photographs depict the streets, homes, schools, work and theater of the Lower East Side. The paintings include works by Williain Gropper, Jacob Epstein, Edward Hopper, Childe Hassam, Chaim Gross, John Sloan, Charles Ulrich, Max Weber and others de- picting the Lower East Side dur- ing its Jewish heyday. There were donuts and cider, and all the exotic drinks made for the lads 'n lassies who go to Joe's teen-age night club. * * * Israel Museum Accepts $1,000,000 From German Publisher for Building JERUSALEM (JTA) - The Is- rael Museum announced that it has decided to accept a proposal from Axel Springer, West Ger- many's most powerful newspaper and magazine publisher, who has offered a large gift for the con- struction and upkeep of a special building to house a library and archives. The museum's directors, it was learned, held a secret. very stormy meeting last week on the question of accepting or rejecting the Springer offer. The publisher made his offer here two months ago, when he was in the city on a private visit. He had offered to contribute $500,000. When told that the museum could not accept the offer be- cause the cost of maintenance for such a new building would be beyond the museum's re- sources, Springer doubled the amount, earmarking $500,000 for maintenance. The dispute in the board, it was learned, centered on whether Springer might have a Nazi past. The board voted by 9 to 3 to accept the Springer offer after an RALPH CHICOREL has numer- ous suits being handled by bar- rister Irving August in -U.S. Dis- trict Court to the effect that Ralph wrote the melody and has the first copyright on the hit tune, "Strang- ers In The Nigh t." . . .
