Tannenwald Sees Need for Schools
to Solve Israel's Social Problems

Affirming the American Jewish
Committee's deep interest in
Israel's progress and in the need
for strong cooperation between
American and Israeli Jewries,
Judge Theodore Tannenwald Jr.,
chairman of the AJ Committee's
Israel committee, told members of
the Detroit chapter that the cur-
rent crises in Israel demand in-
creased cooperation in the partner-
ship between the two communities.
Judge Tannenwald addressed the
chapter at a meeting at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Levey on
West Seven Mile Road. Troubled
by the political divisiveness in
Israel because it is "grounded on
personalities," he also said there
was cause for concern over the cur-
rent economic conditions in Israel,
and he said he was esp e ci ally

anxious to see a solution to the
social problem involving Ashkenazi
and Sephardi elements.
"The real need is the assur-
ance of opportunities for the
Oriental Jews who now form 55
per cent of Israel's population,"
he stated. "American Jews should
show a particular interest in this
social problem, and we must
exert ourselves to assure in-
creased educational provisions
for the Sephardi newcomers in
Israel."
"If Israel is to evolve as part of
the Western democratic society,"
he added, "it will depend on what
is being done in terms of education
and the proper vocational training
of the settlers from Algeria, Moroc-
co and other Oriental countries."
