Many Jewish books are on the
r s aarket. Some are novels whose
ex appeal is certain to bid
f or best seller positions. Others
a re related to the world's trage-
Lies, especially the holocaust, the
r diddle East, the Iron Curtain
( ountries .
In the creative field, in the area
f research, the Jewish Publica-
t ion Society continues to retain a
I najor role. Its supreme task in
t he past decade was to complete
I he revised translation of the To-
ah. Now it approaches the sec-
( nd phase of that effort: the re-
ised translation of the Haftoroth,
of the Prophets.
These tasks are the result of a
d edicated effort to encourage sup-
] ort for the publication of Jewish
c lassics, to assure membership on
as large a scale as possible in the
major non-profit Jewish publish-
ing movement in this country.
A new leader has just been
-,
chosen to pursue the JPS tasks in
the year perhaps years ahead.
This great movement has turned
to a distinguished personality for
leadership, and American Jewry's
higher cultural values are expected
to benefit from the new role by
the inauguration of a new chapter
- in a major literary field.
This is the confidence enter-
tained in many quarters with the
elevation of Joseph M. First to the
presidency of the Jewish Publica-
tion Society of America.
His official and formal title in
private life is vice president and
general counsel of the Philadel-
phia Inquirer. But it is necessary
to go to his background, to his
extensive career in academic cir-
cles, in law, in civic movements
and in Jewish affairs, fully to rec-
ognize the merits of his earned
leadership of the major Jewish
publishing project that acts as a
"non-profit educational situation
devoted to Jewish culture."
A native of Philadelphia—he was
born April 1, 1906—he earned three
degrees at the University of Penn-
sylvania, in 1927, 1930 and 1932,
including a B.S., L.L.B. and L.L.M.
Winner of many honors, he has
received awards as West Phila-
delphia's High School's outstanding
alumnus, U. of Pa. Alumni Award
of Merit, outstanding alumnus
award from U. of Pa. McKean
Law Club and a distinguished serv-
ice award from Pennsylvania Bar
Association.

Israel's Potash Industry

11!41

The second stage of the expan-
sion of the Dead Sea works with
the aid of Israel Bonds will in-
crease potash production to one
million tons a year, the output
of bromine will be expanded, and
the production of magnsium will
be initiated. In Haifa, a large
chemical plant will be built for the
production of potassium nitrate and
phosphoric acid. Much of the fu-
ture of Israel's economy depends
on the development of its chemi-
cal industry.
