Austria Accused of Creating New Nazi Moods

Austria's political parties and
national leaders are charged by
the American Jewish Congress
with failure to admit their coun-
try's past, atone for anti-Semitic
excesses and to create a new na-
tional mood invulnerable to Nazi
teachings.
"The impact of extremist in-
fluence in Austria has become too
pronounced to be disregarded,"
the report declared. "Instances of
Austri a's vulnerability to Nazi
reinfection have finally become
too glaring to dismiss.

Percentage of Aged Jews
Up in N.J. Communities

HACKENSACK, N.J. (JTA) —
The percentage of aging among
the Jewish population in Bergen
County is growing, requiring the
planning of a comprehensive pro-
gram of community services which
"will lessen the fear of tomorrow
for the aged person," Max M.
Kleinbaum, executive director of
the Jewish Welfare Council of
Bergen County, stated in his an-
nual report.
A YMHA study of the Jewish
population of the county, aged 65
and over, he said, showed in 1963
that the county's Jewish popula-
tion included 7 per cent of persons
aged over 65.
Now, said Kleinbaum, "it is to
be noted that the Jewish aging
are increasing at a faster rate than
the general population, because the
preponderance of the Jewish popu-
lation is in the age bracket of
40 to 64."

tremist, right-wing bodies . . all
clearly require that the attention
of the world, mainly focused on

tendencies long overlooked in Aus-

The report — written by Phil
Baum, director of the AJCongress
Commission on International Af-
fairs, and Carol Weisbrod, re-
search associate of the Commis-
sion — charged that Austrian lead-
ers had succeeded in masking
their country's "willing embrace"
of Hitlerism and had "sought to
evade even the limited responsi-
bility imposed by the Allied pow-
ers in 1943" holding Austria "re-
sponsible" for participating in the
war "on the side of Hitlerite Ger-
many."
