AFTER A LONG SEARCH for a
classical guitarist to play at his
Place D'Encore, Chuck Muer. din-
ing bossman at the Hotel Pontchar-
train finally found one in St. Louis,
on the recommendation of Mel
Snedden, Chuck's catering man-
ager . . . However, as it turned
out, Paul Mutrux owned the Three
Fountains where he was appear-
ing, and was the architect and de-
veloper of St. Louis' Gaslight
Square! . . . But all was not lost
. . . because, as the saying goes,
everything turns out for the best
... Sam Brown, was touring nation-
ally with Vic Damone, plus work-
ing at the Royal Box of the Ameri-
cana Hotel in New York and doing
a 14-month engagement at the
Hotel Plaza Persian Room in New
York . . . As luck would have it,
Sam, a native Detroiter, became
available and wanted to return to
his hometown ... He's now appear-
ing at Chuck's unique restaurant.
OPENING OCT. 10 for a 7-week
engagement at Chuck's Cabaret La
Boheme of the Pontchartrain, will
be the wonderful musical styling
of Merry King and his violin
orchestra . . . Morry's annual en-
gagements include the Eden Roc
in Miami Beach and the Sands
Hotel in Las Vegas.
SALLY KLEIN, the favorite
cateress of so many people for so
many years is the owner of Sally's
Pancake House in the Four Free-
doms Bldg, 1600 Antietam between
Rivard and Orleans . . . Sally's
place is like a mecca for people
from all walks of life who come
there to chat and enjoy her good
food . . . The Four Freedoms Bldg.
is in the area where all those new
high rises and town houses have
-gone up and are still being built
downtown . . . Sally is there every
day and evening until 8 p.m.
WE HAD A DELIGHTFULLY
excellent dinner at the Penthouse
Lounge on Park Ave. . . . The food
was delicious—don't think we've
ever had a salad with its distinc-
tive chef's dressing taste . . . Its a
fine revelation to know about The
Penthouse, since the food and serv-
ice are not the only outstanding
points about this downtown lounge
. . . At 9 p.m., a trio of musicians ;
made up of piano, guitar and bass;
give out with some of the finest
rhythm styling it has been out
pleasure to hear . . . The singing
of Lori Young is much much better
than good ... She's a definite audi-
ence pleaser with a style that ranks
with the best of them . . Every
night seems to be celebrity night
at the Penthouse Lounge ... You
never know who'll show up, and
perhaps get on the stage or just
sit around, like Jack Carter ; Buddy
Hackett, Eddie Fisher and others
. . . When Billy Daniels comes to
Detroit, Oct. 1, for the Knights of
Pythias', "Knight To Remember"
at Masonic Temple, he'll probably
be at the Penthouse signing away
for his old buddy, Turk Prujanski,
who runs the place now.
