JERUSALEM — A United States
delegation is expected in Israel
next month to work out concrete
proposals for establishment of a
much-delayed pilot project to ap-
ply nuclear energy to desalination,
sources here reported Tuesday.
An agreement for the project
was signed during Premier Levi
Eshkol's meeting last year in
Washington with President John-
son.
The principal obstacle to imple-

money. Israel was understood to
need a United States grant of
around $60,000,000, plus a long-
term loan of about $150,000,000 to
complete the pilot plant.
Dr. Jakobovits Named British
Commonwealth Chief Rabbi
LONDON (JTA)—Dr. Immanuel
Jakobovits, of New York, 44-year-
old Orthodox rabbi who was born
in Germany and educated in Lon-
don, was elected Sunday as chief
rabbi of the United Hebrew Con-
gregation of the British Common-
wealth.
He was elected by the Chief
Rabbinate Conference which is the
electoral college for such a choice,
and is composed of representatives
of the United Synagogue as well as
of delegates from communities in
provincial Britain, delegates from
Commonwealth c o u n t r i e s, and
other bodies which recognize the
authority of the chief rabbi and
contribute financially to the ex-
penditures of the Chief Rabbinate.

Dr. Jakobovits is scheduled to as-

next Passover.
Sir Isaac Wolfson was chairman
of the conference, which tradition-

chief rabbi. He is president of the
United Synagogue, with which ap-
proximately 80 per cent of the
British Commonwealth's Jews are
affiliated.
Buffalo Seeks a Donor
BUFFALO (JTA) — Two Jew-
ish organizations here—the United
Jewish Fderation and the Jewish
Center — announced they would
like some individual or founda-
tion to set up a $5,000 scholarship
fund to help some college students
take graduate studies in social
work.
The objective, said Sydney S.
Abzug, UJA executive director,
and William Grossman, who holds
the corresponding position at the
Jewish Center, is to interest stu-
dents in putting their talents to
work for social agencies in this
city.
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Conditions
have improved recently in Israel
for Jewish-Arab understanding, and
"there is more readiness lately in
Arab intellectual circles for a
dialogue" with Jews, a communi-
que issued at the close of the Mar-
tin Buber Seminar at Givat Haviva
noted.
The seminar was attended by a
number of Israel Arabs, as well
as by Jewish and foreign writers
and philosophers. Ar chbishop
George Hakim of Nazareth was the
guest of honor at the closing ses-
sion.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (JTA)—
A State Supreme Court justice
took under advisement a petition
by 25 parents opposing plans of
the Rockland County school board
to use a church and a synagogue
for public school classes.
The parents, in a petition calling
the plan "unconstitutional" and in
violation of the church-state separ-
ation clause, asked that the board
be banned from using St. Joseph's
Catholic Church and Temple Beth
El for classes. Both are in Spring
Valley.
