started on the construction of an
expressway connecting the center
of Tel Aviv with Lydda Airport
that would shorten the driving time
from here to the airport to about
15 minutes. It now takes more than
a half hour to reach the airport.
The expressway is expected to be
completed within a year.

Dr. Epstein's essay on Rebecca
Gratz follows:
A member of an American
Jewish family famous during the
18th and 19th Centuries as mer-
chants and civic leaders, Rebecca
Gratz was born in Philadelphia in
1781 and proudly continued the
Gratz traditions.
She deserves to be remembered
not only for who she was but for
what she achieved in her own
right. Gracious, wealthy and beau-
tiful, she was also a woman of
rare talents as an organizer and
devoted worker for many chari-
table and religious causes.
She lived to the ripe age of 58
and by the time she died in Phila-
delphia in 1869, she was as well
known for the legends that had
grown up about her as for her
worthy accomplishments.
People said that Miss Gratz had
been in love with a Christian. She
had refused to marry him, how-
