THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Harry Mondry, Labor Zionist Leader, Dies Harry Mondry, president and founder of Highland Appliance Co. and leader in the Labor Zionist movement, died Tuesday at age 67. Mr. Mondry, 22902 S. Bellwood; Southfield, founded the appliance firm in 1934. Including the main HARRY MONDRY office at 5301 Grand River, the company has eight offices in De- troit and suburbs. On his 50th birthday, Mr. Mon- dry distributed gifts to philan- thropies that showed the wide range of his interests: Histadrut, Jewish National Fund, Farband Schools, Sholem Aleichem Schools, Workmen's Circle Schools, YIVO Scientific Institute, Labor Zionist Relief and Rehabilitation Fund, Pioneer Women's Child Welfare Fund, Yiddisher Kaemfer, United Hebrew Schools, Hebrew Free Loan Association, Chesed shel Emes and Teachers Seminar. Born in Poland, Mr. Mondry came to the United States in 1921. A year later he married Adele Brose. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, David and Eugene; a brother, Victor; three sisters, Mrs. Esther Saporta and Mrs. Chana Mondry, both of Is- rael and Mrs. Malka Silverberg of Argentina; and six grandchil- dren. A member of Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, Mr. Mondry held posi- tions of leadership in Arlazaroff Branch 137 and Branch 2 of Far- band Labor Zionist Order, led His- tadrut campaigns and was secretary and treasurer of Farband Folk Schools. Birnkrant, former Detroiter and a partner in the local law firm of Birnkrant, Birn- krant and Birnkrant, died Aug. 31 in Los Angeles. He was 65. Mr. Birnkrant, brother of the consul general of Austria in De- troit, Norman H. Birnkrant, lived in Los Angeles for many years, but retained his partnership in the firm with Norman and Theodore H., another brother. A graduate of the Detroit Col- lege of Law, he was an interna- tional investor and specialist in the development of shopping centers: He was a trustee of the University of Southern California and a bene- factor of the Cecele and Michael C. Birnkrant Women's Dormitory on the USC campus. In addition, he was past president of the Bel Air Association, founder and mem- ber of the Los Angeles Music Cen- ter and a member of Hillcrest Country Club. He was stricken with a heart attack at the close of his act at a testimonial dinner in the Friars Club, a private Manhattan gathering place for show people. Kelly made many television and stage appearances, some of which were for Jewish philanthropic causes.
