What is significant in the con-
demnation of Brown within the
National Party is that it first
appeared in "Die Burger," the
highly influential pro-government
paper, and that the terms the
paper used were blunt and out-
spoken.

Rabbi Bernard Casper, chief
rabbi of the Federation of Syna-
gogues, sent a message express-
ing the "profound sense of sor-
row and dismay of the Jewish
community. We think of Ver-
woerd, the patriot, the devoted
son of his country, respected
even by his opponents. His eye
was not dimmed nor his force
wasted."

South Africa's senior Reform
rabbi, Arthur Super, in a message,
paid tribute to the slain premier's
dedication and said that South
Africa's Reform congregations
were arranging special mourning
services.
Edel Horowitz, chairman of the
South African Zionist Federation,
echoed the "grief" of South Africa
and conveyed "deepest sympathy
toward the government and the
. widow." His message added that
"We can only pray that God- will
preserve the peoples of this re-
•public at this critical time, and
that the peace and democratic,
progress of all of us will not be
imperiled by thiS evil act."
, The assassination drew attention
to a most recent statement Ver-
woerd had made in friendliness to
Jewry.
A London Jewish Chronicle re-
port from Johannesburg, published
the latter part of last month,
stated:

Dr. Verwoerd, the South Afri-
can Prime Minister, has told a
visiting Bnai Brith official that
he is happy that anti-Semitism
has abated in South Africa.
In passing, Dr. Verwoerd also
told Saul Joftes, the head of
Bnai Brith's office of interna-
tional affairs, that Jews had
made a good contribution to the
country and would continue to
do so.
The Jews of South Africa have
been following with interest the
"unmasking," as an Afrikaans
newspaper ("Die Beeld") de-
scribes it, of S. E. D. Brown, a
National Party member of Brit-
ish origin. He has been very
sharply criticized for his meth-
. Qds of ascribing "guilt by associ-
ation."
is group is in close spiritual
political alliance with the
reme right-wing John Birch
Society in the United States. He
himself edits a monthly called
the "South African Observer,"
which was at one time subsi-
dized by the ruling National
Party.
Brown's monthly began by
casting doubt on the loyalty of
Jews (whom he often associated
with "communism"), "liberals"
and moderates in South- African
politics, and continued in recent
times by questioning the loyalty
