She heard something, all
right: a truck smacking
into her rear fender.

Israel Hasidim Welcome
Mattersdorf Rebbe

TEL AVIV — Hundreds of Ha-
sidim waited patiently many hours
Monday night for the arrival of the
delayed plane carrying Rabbi Sam-
uel Ehrenfeld, the Mattersdorf
Rebbe, and his family.
They welcomed the Rebbe with
songs and dances. Rabbi Ehren-
feld, who came from the United
States to live at his new settlement
near Jerusalem, arrived with his
family of seven children and their
wives and many grandchildren.
Because of the late hour of arrival,
the Rebbe was taken to Jerusalem
without an official welcome, which
was held Wednesday at the Mat-
tersdorf Shikun.

A Happy New Year
To All Our Friends

*

For weeks, a six-year-old
lad kept telling his first

grade teacher about the
baby brother or sister that
was expected at his house.
Then, one day, the mother
allowed the boy to feel the
movements of the unborn
child. The six-year-old was
obviously impressed, but
made no comment. Further-
more, he stopped telling his
teacher about the impending event.
The teacher finally sat the boy on her lap and said, "Tommy,
whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were
expecting at home ?" Tommy burst into tears and confessed, "I
think Mommie ate it!"

In the carefree Edwardian era--before World War I a cer-
tain English duke threw money about with such abandon that

—

his barristers finally told him he simply would have to cut down.
"For example," volunteered one, "you needn't maintain three
pastry cooks in one kitchen." The duke was properly vexed.
"Dammit," he thundered, "can't a man have a biscuit if he
wants it?"

There's a remarkable character named Alemany, according to
Jack Fuller, who compiled these literary notes:
1. Mark Twain wrote a book about what his hero would do
when his best friend died (Huck'll Bury Finn).
2. Sir Walter Scott wrote about the occupation of the Rus-
sian farmer (Ivan Hoe).
3. J. D. Salinger wrote what would happen if a husband came
home and found his wife in a tub full of whisky (Catch Her in

the Rye).
4. And the best-seller of them all tells us what the cow said
When her gentleman friend was leaving the pasture ('Bye, Bull).
