THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 32-Friday, September 2, 1966 Interest in World Cup soccer Matches 21,000 Attend Opening of Maccabiad in Brazil BY JESSE SILVER (Copyright, 1966 JTA, SAO PAULO, Brazil (JTA)-The sixth Pan-American Maccabia Games were held at the Ibira Puera state gymnasium here with all of the stadium's 21,000 seats filled and more than 5,000 persons unable to gain admittance. The pageant by contingents of Jewish athletes included two Is- raelis and a 34-member United States team. the first sent to the Pan-American Maccabiad. Among the high officials present for the inauguration were Cardinal Arch- bishop Dom Angella Rossi; Mach- ado de Carvalho, the Sao Paulo secretary of state; Major Silvio de Magalhaes Padilha, president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee; and Manuel Epstein, representing the World Maccabi Union. Inc.) The World Cup soccer- matches created so much interest in Israel that over 1,000 Israelis made the journey to England for the compe- tition. The Israeli press gave the event extensive coverage with no fewer than 20 newspaper reporters on hand. In addition there were live reports on Kol Israel radio. All this despite the fact that Israel was not among the 16 teams that played in Britain. George Cohen, a member of the winning English side, is not Jewish. "But with that name," he said, "my family couldn't be anything else, could it?" * * A national tournament involving the four soccer teams in the United States sponsored by Jewish organi- zations was held for the first time recently in San Francisco. The event was part of the 20th anni- versary celebration of the Hakoah Club of that city. The teams were the Maccabee Athletic Club of Los Angeles, Mac- cabee Soccer Club of Chicago, Maccabee Soccer Club of New York and Hakoah. All are out- standing teams in their area. * * Barry Siegel, executive secre- tary of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, points out that of the seven Jew- ish players elected to the collegiate football Hall of Fame, four, Dr. Joe Alexander, Syracuse; Fred Sington, Alabama; Sid Luckman, Columbia and the newest member, Aaron Rosenberg, USC, were active undergraduate men of ZBT. It's not too surprising since ZBT has always been noted for its ath- letes. The fraternity was founded in 1898 and has given an award to its best athlete since 1915. The first recipient was Sol Yassenoff who played football for Ohio State. * Sol Rosen was named commis- sioner of the pro football Contin- ental League after serving as act- ing commissioner .. . Phil Ratner of Cornell and Mike Buckner of Northwestern were cut by the new Miami Dolphins in the rookie training camp. Both men suffered injuries which held back their pro- gress. Ratner played defensive end and Buckner defensive halfback . .. Guard Mike Katz of Southern Connecticut was one of the last cuts at the New York Jets train- ing camp . .. Phil Handler, defen- sive line coach and Sid Luckman, quarterback coach, will be back with the Chicago Bears this season . . .
