LIBJ's Rosh Hashana Message

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

WASHINGTON (JTA) The
White House released the follow-
ing message from President John-
son:
1
"On the eve of Rosh Hashana
and the High Holy Days, I am
pleased to extend to my fellow
Americans of the Jewish faith my
warm greetings for a Happy New
Year.
"These are the days when we
are reminded that the perfect
society is one which we must work
to create and fashion in this world
and in our own time.
"The prophets taught the Jew-
ish people never to falter in the
world-wide search for the better-

Mr. and Mrs. Philip Kutnick,
13201 Dartmouth, Oak Park, an-
nounce the engagement of their
daughter Marlene Sue to Ralph E.

Yamron, 17539 Appoline.
An Oct. 16 wedding is planned.

Dr. Robert Luby Uses
Sports as Stepping Stone
for Culturally-Deprived

Culturally disadvantaged youth
of Detroit got a taste of good
sportsmanship this summer, devel-
oping skills in athletics, through
federally financed projects.
Dr. Robert R. Luby, divisional
director for the Detroit Public
Schools, cited the full schedule of
sports in the Great Cities and Ex-
tended School Programs — tennis,
baseball, track and field, physical
conditioning.
He said the emphasis was on
"teaching these children—who
are culturally-disadvantaged—to
develop athletic prowess and
physical conditioning and co-
ordination. This, in turn, im-
proves their own self-image and
results in their raising their own
ambitions for becoming better
citizens!'
To Luby, health and physical
education can be the door to bet-
ter education for many of today's
culturally-disadvantaged young-
sters—which is the reason that
athletic prowess is used as moti-
vation for upgrading.
The baseball class, which has
marked the first time such instruc-
tion has been offered as a part
of the summer school program, has
been held at Mackenzie High and
coached by Ed Silverstein.

Vice President's
Hearty Message
on the New Year

Vice President Hubert - H.
Humphrey has issued the follow-
ing hearty message for Rosh
Hashana:
Mrs. Humphrey joins with me
in expressing greetings to all of
our fellow citizens of the Jewish
faith in celebration of Rosh Hasha-
na.
We recall so many pleasant
memories with dear friends and
their families, ob-
serving the Jew-
ish New Year in
times past. We
know their hearts
are full with the
approach of the
High Holy Days.
As throughout
her ancient his-
tory, Judaism's
message is uni-
versal—each and
every individual
is responsible be-
fore a just and
Humphrey
merciful God.
In the sacred traditions of the
Ten Days of Penitence are lessons
for all mankind and for all reli-
gions.
The blowing of the ram's horn is
a symbol of God's summons to the
people for self-judgment, self-im-
provement and atonement.
Who among us, whatever his
faith, can fail to be impressed by
the inspiring prayers, the hallow-
ed melodies which will usher in
the year 5727, as for so many cen-
turies past?
Who among us can fail to learn,
to benefit and to aspire to do bet-
ter?
What a heritage is Zion's. In
every land 'and under every condi-
tion, in times of joy or of sadness,
of good will or persecution, in
Jerusalem or in exile "by the
rivers of Babylon," in tiny villages
or great metropolises, the Jewish
people have maintained an unbrok-
en continuity of spiritual and cul-
tural devotion.
Father and mother have handed
down to son and daughter their
love of God and of humanity, their
respect for Tora, their thirst for
freedom, for social justice and
peace.
So noble a legacy of the past
deserves a noble and joyous future.
May this, then, be a year of years.
May our beloved America con-
tinue its progress, achieving ever
closer harmony among all religions
and races, a good life for all its
people.
May our sister democracy of
Israel further prosper and attain
what she most seeks—lasting peace
with all her neighbors, fullest op-
portunity to be partner in works
of goodness with all.
In those unhappy lands where
despotism restricts Jewish religion
and culture, may the year 5727
witness progress toward a better,
freer day.
May prayers which will be heard
from temples everywhere be an-
swered—for a world where "nation
shall not lift up sword against na-
tion," where men will "choose the
good and reject the evil" and
where all men shall be brothers.
May the Jewish people be in-
scribed in the Book of Happiness.
- - A joyous New Year to all.

ment and peace of mankind and
never to leave the conflict against
the forces of discrimination and
poverty.
"These are precepts which were
inherited by our forefathers from
those who received them at Sinai.
"They are beliefs which have
been given new and forceful ex-
pression in the State of Israel,
where they were first proclaimed
and where Rosh Hashana prayers
were first uttered.
"On this Rosh Hashana, let
us pray together for a tranquil
society both in this' country and
around the globe.
"And let us ask that the heavy.
hand of tyranny be lifted wher-
ever it exists and that all become
equal as they are equal before
God."
"Lyndon B. Johnson"
