Until the War of Liberation only a few heard of this house. But since then many have heard about it. Near the house runs the border be- tween the State of Jordan and the State of Israel. There, , is the only frontier post between the two states. The name of the post is Mandelbaum gate after the name of the rabbi's house. Whoever has seen the Arch of Triumph in Paris or Titus's Arch in Rome may imagine that the Mandel- baum gate is a similar kind of gate. But the truth is otherwise: Near Rabbi Mandelbaum's house there is no special gateway. There is only a barbed wire fence and small sentry hut. There is not much traffic at this gate. Usually only a few people pass through it; diplomates, UN personnel, priests and tourists from Israel to Jordan or Jordan to Israel. Near the gate Israeli and Jordanian representatives occasionally meet. There they try to clarify common problems: persons who have crossed the border inadvertantly, infiltrators who have stolen, activities against contagious diseases etc. This is the only place where it is possible to see an Israeli and Jordanian policeman having a friendly chat. Both of them have no doubt similar problems —both have a wife and children at home. Their fdendship is interfered with by the border, facilitated by the gate. UV/hit? • Translation of Hebrew column. MEW THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — LETTER BOX On the Separation Issue 5Yin rtv znnri -)117 ri!nn 26 Friday, September 2, 1966 Editor, The Jewish News: In your editorial of Aug. 19, and in a follow-up with a reply by Senator Philip Hart, you discuss the proposed amendment by Sen- ator Everett Dirksen. Though I am against this bill and other breaches of the First Amendment, I feel - that Senator Hart has mis- interpreted this part of the Con- stitution. He has stated the phrase, "Congress shall make no law re- specting an establishment of re- ligion . . .", to mean that no law may be made to name one re- ligion as the official religion of the land. However I think it has a much broader sense. The whole concept of separation of church and state is evolved from this amendment. To interpret it as to mean no official religion may be allowed, is to rule out all other infringements of "c h u r c h and state." It seems to me that our Found- ing Fathers meant that religion may not be integrated with any- thing dealing with government; thus it would also include banning prayers in school. Therefore, it 'is not the mere banning of a national religion, but rather the whole involvement of religion in government. Thus Senator Hart's argument that the reciting of "Ave Maria" or the "Lord's Prayer" is establishing re- ligion does not hit at the core of the problem. It is involvement of religion in government (this case happens to be school which is in the vicinity of government) that violates our constitution. Sincerely and with the utmost respect to the editor and Senator Hart, MARK ALLAN GOLDSMITH 19767 Cranbrook. Judge Kent to Address Israel Bond Reception Common Pleas Judge, George D. Kent will be the guest speaker at the Young Israel of Greenfield pre-High Holy Day letdership re- ception, Sept. 12, 8:30 p.m., to be hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Irving A. Hershman in their home, 14261 Wales, Oak Park. The reception is on behalf • of Is- rael Bonds. Judge Kent, who has served on the bench five Judge Kent years, is a World War II veteran, was wounded in combat and deco- rated for bravery. He served for a number of years in the prosecu- tor's office and was head of the homicide division. Israeli Songwriter, Top Music VIP in Government, to Pay Visit Here Emanuel Amiran (Pugatchov), director of the Israel Education Ministry's musical studies division, who was invited by the U. S. State Department to the conference of the International Society of Musi- cal Educators in Ann Arbor and Interlochen, will spend a few days in Detroit as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Eskin, 19339 Lauder. He is expected here Sunday. There has rarely been an oneg Shabat, or campfire sing-song, held anywhere in the Jewish world with- out some of his songs being sung. There is no Israeli school song book, Jewish anthology of folk songs or modern celebration of .fes- tivals complete, without his famous "Ki Mitzion," "Uru Achim" or "Ush 'avtem Mayim." When President Zalman Shazar decided on something original for a diplomatic function honor- ing United Nations Day, he asked Amiran to arrange the program and even give the fes- tive opening speech. For 15 years, Amiran has held the highest government post in the musical world of Israel. His first and foremost innovation in that position is the annual schools choral festival held during the en- tire month of March and now in- cluding 35,000 school children in their school choirs. This has given rise to the annual school band fes- tivals, for which the main impetus was a second project, the acquisi- tion of musical instruments through the efforts of Chicagoan Max Targ, who has in the last 15 years sent a million-dollars worth of instru- ments through AMLI, the Ameri- can Musical Library for Israel, foi Amiran to distribute.
