Deferments Due to Jewish Draftees for High Holy Days

The National Jewish Welfare
Board's Commission on Jewish
Chaplaincy has been officially ad-
vised by the Selective Service Coin-
mission that all draft boards have
been asked to give "favorable con-
sideration, whenever possible" to
requests from Jewish registrants
for postponement of their physical
examination or induction into the
Armed Forces during the coining
Jewish High Holy Days.
This official word was received
by Rabbi Selwyn D. Ruslander, of
Temple Israel, Dayton, O., com-
mission chairman, from Brig. Gen.
Lewis B. Hershey, director of the
Selective Service System, in the
form of Operations Bulletin No.
81, amended as of June 30, 1966,

Braille Prayer Books, Records to Assist Sightless
in U.S., Canada, Over the High Holy Days

Hundreds of blind Jews in the
United States, Canada, Israel and
other countries throughout the
world will participate in religious
services with their own congrega-
tions on Rosh Hashana and Yom
Kippur this year, with the aid of
Braille editions of High Holy
Day prayer books provided free
of charge by the Jewish Braille
Institute of America.
The Reform Prayer Book for
the New Year and the Day of
Atonement, in Hebrew and English
Braille, has been made available
in three large volumes, and the
Conservative "Mahzor," in Hebrew

and English Braille, has been
made available in six large vol-
umes.
In addition, the Jewish Braille
Institute has distributed to the
blind hundreds of long-playing
high-fidelity recordings for the
High Holy Days. The traditional
services, including Kol Nidre, have
been recorded on the 10 sides of
five records, and the total play-
ing time is nearly five hours.

York City is president of the Insti-
tute, and Dr. Jacob Freid is ex-
ecutive director.
